Can You Do A "Title" Search?

I'm wondering if there's a way to get a print-out on the Serial Number of a 1902 Colt revolver that I have. These are available on vehicle and property Titles. I know that property Titles give the names and dates of the previous owners.

I've ordered a Colt Archive letter, so I will know where my Colt was originally shipped to and I'm hoping to start researching from that direction when I receive the letter. I bought this from a Dealer and they couldn't (or wouldn't?) tell me anything about the history.

About how far back would the CA Records go? Would Federal Records give me a better shot?

Is there a better way to try and retrace my Colt's footsteps?

    Thanks,

    Billy

It depends on how it was transferred.

If it went through dealers, they might have the records, but some might be unwilling to share.

If it went through private transfers, there's no reason anyplace should have any record.

You might discover that the original sale went to someone prominent, such that they might be found today. If so, you might write them and ask.

Frozen in 2015, it is falling out of date and I can no longer edit the content. But much of it is still good!
