    Gun to pass down

So I was thinking, what would be a good gun to pass down on to a loved one, one day.

Something American, like a 1911, or an M1. And made in America.

Something that would be fairly timeless in design, and aesthetically pleasing (ie. a 1911)

    Nothing "tactical" no polymers either.

Preferably something custom or limited edition, or collectors. (wilson combat, or a somewhat rare colt)

What do you think would be good?

Python, Colt Delta Elite, heck any colt, s&w would be nice. Depends on your budget Vic! Are you going to shoot it also?

I agree with your first go: A 1911 or an M1 Garand. Those are quintessentially American and were significant firearms in defending Freedom and Democracy during the 20th Century. Barring those, any other firearms that shoot .45 ACP or 30-06.

Why not both? I just inherited from my dad his 70's era 1911. I plan on having it engraved with the 10th mountain division logo in his memory, then have it refinished with a melonite treatment. It will go well with my Garand.

I will never let my M1 Garand go. One day I'll pass it down to my son (or grandson).

You're all over the chart - I myself would check out 1903 - 1917 - Garand - They're already collectibles and will only get better by the time you hand them down - Then any wartime 1911 will fit the bill nicely -

Another vote for the M-1 Garand.

General George S Patton Jr called it the "The greatest battle implement ever devised."

How can you not pass it down to future generations.

Wow, not one of you has thought about who is getting the gun and what might they do with it.

If it is too rare or expensive someone who has control at that moment in time might just sell it and grab the cash.

I would want something that would be valuable, have played a big part in the history of America (many years from now, it may just be a big deal again) and something that can be enjoyed along the way.

That is why I have a Deluxe Big Boy Henry Rifle in my collection and I buy every one of my grandkids a henry lever action so that they can have one of their very own and hopefully be able to pass it on to their grandkids and keep the shooting tradition alive and well at my house.

The only correct answer I have found to the OP's question is a Henry Rifle.

THose who don't know the historical role this rifle had in the taming of the wild west and since, should check out the Henry website and also do research. Great stories. Besides, once you feel the action on a Henry you will never be happy with a Winchester or Marlin types again.
