    I'm AK556 Curious

PSA makes an AK that eats 556 and takes AR PMAGs. I really don't want to be bring in a new caliber and already have an AR10 for 7.62 sized fun. This would satisfy my AK curiosity and not make me adopt new mags and a new ammo.

Anyone have an AK556 and can share their experience?

Technically, an "AK-15" is chambered in 7.62x39mm.

    Izhmash AK-12 = 5.45x39mm
    Izhmash AK-15 = 7.62x39mm

Which is why PSA calls their 5.56x45mm STANAG mag AK style rifles, the AK-556.

        From reviews on other forums...

The PSA AK-556 has a better magazine well design/function than the Zastava PAP M90NP.

The Zastava PAP N90NP was discontinued due to poor sales.
It was a 5.56x45mm N90 modified by the factory to use STANAG magazines.

I have a 556 Galil Gen 2. Rock solid reliability and dead nuts accurate. It prefers mags from OK Surefeed. PMAGS dont drop as freely.

If the AK and AR had a baby, it would be the Israeli made Galil

Also own a 7.62x39 Galil. Just as fun to shoot.

I have an AK in 556, it's my go to since fire restrictions are almost year round here now, and steel case is not doable during that time.

If I was in AZ, and they don't have similar restrictions. I'd take a 762 over it.

AK mags are cheap in free America, stock up!

I've had a few AK pattern rifles in 5.56 and currently am down to just one, a Galil ARM. I tend to like guns chambered in the cartridge that they were designed for, so largely have never warmed up to AK's in 5.56. The smoothest one I had was a Valmet M76 and next to that is my Galil. Since the Galil was designed originally for the NATO round and at the time Galil mags were cheap as chips, I kept it. It eats steel case ammo flawlessly and overall is a very solid (and heavy), rifle.

I don't know about the current offerings by other manufacturers, but I imagine they all work okay. As long as they use standard AR type magazines and not a special type like the European variants, I imagine they would be okay.

IMO, 7.62x39 AK's are the best one to get. Magazines are still inexpensive and ammo availability is good.

A Galil isn't AK enough for me, surprisingly. Though I did consider it. The funny part is, I wanted to rock the mag in like an AK.

I just picked up the FB Radom Beryl 5.56 rifle. If it's good enough for Poland's military, it's good enough for me! Yes, the mags aren't as easy to get, but I stocked up.

I think AKs in 5.56 are a great addition to your ever growing collectiona
