I wonder if the guy getting searched was an ATF agent or someone pretending to be ?

#1 rule: Never, ever speak to a federal agent.
#2 rule: refer to rule #1.

he probably was, which makes it hilarious. if he wasn't on an ego power trip, this could have turned out less embarrassing for him

He is ATF and is suing the cops - for doing their job.
I wager any fed going into that burg now does a courtesy call to the cop shop telling them they will be visiting joe citizen without a warrant to see if they can get him to incriminate himself.

If he really was an atf agent he should know to comply and what happens if you don’t what a fool.

I was sitting in my car when multiple squad cars came rolling into the parking lot of the store I was in front of. I know what was coming next, I got out of my car, put my hands on the hood and waited. Sure enough shotgun pointed at me and orders to get on the ground, I complied and waited for things to calm down. Turns out their was a confrontation between the store clerk and a kid, clerk hit a silent alarm. When they had their man (kid) I told the CHP officer with the shotgun. While I was still face down on the ground, I’m an off duty peace officer and I have a off duty gun on my right hip. Also told him my Badge/ID is in my back pocket, your more then welcome to remove it. He did, then apologized I told him it’s cool I understand, left without getting shot or tased. Morale of the story follow instructions, especially if you know them by heart.
Im a warmonger baby, I got blood in my eyes and I'm looking at you.

I used to work fairly close to home, so I usually drove home for lunch. One day as I did so, I got pulled over. Cop was taking longer than usual so I figured something was up. Another cop pulled up in my rear quarter and dismounted with a shotgun.

The kicker to all this is I had a back injury and had trouble just getting out of the car. Luckily I had healed enough to not need my "cane" that I was using, which was a 7 iron with a nice shiny chrome shaft. Long story short I went where they said, struggling a bit, and they were satisfied that nobody jumped out of my trunk.

Turns out somebody had just robbed a jewelry store in a car like mine, the same color as mine, and I even looked like the guy that did it.

Good thing the cops didn't see you let the other guy out of the car before they stopped you.

What is the going pay rate for a good wheel-man these days?

I think that's a common excuse used when they just want to check you out but can't come up with a better reason to pull you over.

I have been pulled over a couple times for nothing and it was that excuse that was used.

It's just the standard butt covering crock of crap used. When their fishing expedition results in an empty hook. BTDT a couple of times myself.

I was pretty sure the cops weren't just lollygagging around when the backup guy with shotgun arrived. Yes, it was pointed at me.
