Does this LWRC muzzle look normal?

Upgrading my factory birdcage to a hypertap today and I was very surprised to see the crown of my barrel looking so rough and ****ty.

I have shot only around 200 rounds. At first, I thought it was just some baked on carbon build up, but it doesn't seem to want to come off.

This might of explains why this barrel has never shot well for me.

    Has anyone seen this before?

Baked on carbon. Going to be a PITA to get off. The large stuff you can chip/flake off (be careful not to damage the crown.) The rest should come off with carbon solvent and patches to get the looser crap, followed by Iosso or JB's (or any similar analogue) on a patch (finger flat on the muzzle and rotate the patch.)

Carbon deposits should come off with a sharp instrument like a scalpel with light pressure. That looks horrible. Did you buy it new?

              Excellent choice in the Hypertap.

It's just carbon. Carburetor cleaner will get that loose and brush it with a brass wire brush before putting your new muzzle fob on. Try gun cleaner/solvent on it. I do not recommend scraping the muzzle area with any metal/sharp tools. Nicking the crown ain't good.

*that crap blows loose with shooting anyway so... non-problem.

Thank you all for your replies!! I soaked it in carbon remover for an hour and it pretty much came right off with some fairly light scraping.

I bought it new and haven't really shot it all that much. I didn't think that that much carbon could build up that fast. I know you're supposed to clean your muzzle brake regularly, but the factory birdcage wasn't showing any visible carbon build up, so it didn't cross my mind to remove it and check underneath. Perhaps all the carbon was getting trapped between the crush washer and the muzzle?

                      Yeah.
My 80s Norinco AK with the slant break developed that baked on carbon after 200 rounds. I hung it upside down in a cup of carbon remover overnight. Took a lot of brass brushing and a strong plastic spoon to scrape it off.
I replaced the slant break with a Chinese muzzle nut.

                        What ammo did you shoot?

I remember the old wolf non magnetic 223. It would leave what looked like black plastic inside the bcg that had to be scraped off 😆

                          That IS carbon buildup.
Soak the muzzle in slip 2000 carbon cutter for a day or two and then wipe it off with an old toothbrush and see what's underneath all that.

                            It's barrel annealing. Perfectly normal.
