    Gun Paper work...

is it good to keep copies of the dros paperwork or PPT reciepts etc for your records? I currently have all mine... just seeing if it was necessary or what everyone else does?

    Thanks

I've tried to keep all of mine, but I hid some of them so good from the wife, even I don't know where they all are anymore.
Lord, make my hand fast and accurate.
Let my aim be true and my hand faster
than those who would seek to destroy me.
Grant me victory over my foes and those who wish to do harm to me and mine.
Let not my last thought be 'If I only had my gun."
And Lord, if today is truly the day you call me home, let me die in an empty pile of brass.

      I don't keep anything. There's no point.

If it's a DROS receipt for a handgun, then that information is already in AFS.

If it's a DROS receipt for a long gun, there is no point because there is no firearm information on there, and that information itself is destroyed by the DoJ after 15 days.

There is absolutely ZERO legal requirement to need to prove any kind of ownership whatsoever.

What I do keep is a small spreadsheet with the information of all my guns. Make/Model/SN#/caliber/Color/finish/etc. I keep that only for personal use or in case of loss/theft.

Are FFL's required to give you a copy of the DROS?

            Not at all.

If it's a long gun DROS, that information is destroyed by the DoJ after 15 days from being submitted. So there's no point in keeping it or giving it to a customer.

If it's a handgun DROS, then the handgun information gets submitted automatically into AFS. So there's no point in keeping it or giving it to a customer.

I was trying to, just to keep as a proof of purchase so I would have something after the boat accident, but I doubt I have all of them

Papers? Nein! I need no papers! I've got them stashed somewhere but I don't put much thought into it.

Yes they are, but only if you ask for a copy.

I have never given customers a copy of the DROS. Mainly because no one has ever asked for a copy.

It would be a waste of ink and I would hate to do it.

To the OP and others who are in the "keep paperwork" camp, what exactly do you think you're accomplishing by keeping copies of this paperwork?

I keep the DROS print out as a touching reminder of a beautiful experience. But that's about all they are good for.

I suppose it could be used as an "official" looking proof of ownership for an insurance claim. Yeah, I know photos are good, but you could take photos of something you don't own also... I don't keep the paperwork myself though.

Honestly, I don't know I'm still new to the scene... so I've just held on to them so far. and for my AR, when I did the PPT I was told it was a good idea to keep the paperwork with me when I took it out to shoot

is there something wrong with keeping it? like just too much info to be found?
