Cost to have a safe combo dial replaced?

I was thinking about doing the work myself, but don't have the time. Anyone paid a lock smith recently to do it? What did it cost?

Most locksmiths charge $120 for a door fee. The price goes up from there. .

It takes under an hour. You will easily spend more than that shopping locksmiths, engaging one, then waiting for the to show up to do the swap.

I highly recommend you do it yourself. If you're just replacing the existing lock for another like one.....should take about an hour tops. My dad had a locksmith quote him $250+ to do his. I watched a video or two and did it in less than an hour.

Very simple to do, just follow the instructions carefully and have pen and paper ready for pass codes.

Why are you replacing it? Can you open the safe? If you want a different combination they sell a tool to do that yourself cheaper than a lock. If the lock is broken and not opening then it has to be drilled out. These are different issues and have different prices.

I bought a old Remington Safe from the late 90's for a song. The lock (S&G) works, but after you put in the last number on the dial, you have to turn the dial to the left almost a full turn while turning the handle for the safe to open.

My old safe is from the 90's and last year the S&G dial was starting to "drift", needing a half number off sometimes. Yeah, they wear out so best to replace before getting locked out. Lock body was $70 and I followed this video from S&G.

That can be from the choice of the last digit in your combination. The point at which the gate lifts are at the same point in the dial, at 0 usually, that is why you shouldn't have your last digit to close to 0. I bet you last digit is a high number.

Changing locks is easy. I even picked up a large old safe with an unknown combination and following instructions found on line was able to drill out the lock and opened it in very little time. After which it took longer to reweld the hole in the door before I replaced the lock.

If you just don't like having to turn the dial so far to open it, I would try changing the combination first.
