Last year, the same thing happened at Sagun Seca. Went to Laguna yesterday and It looked like it had been burned recently.

Caused by someone shooting surplus steel core/jacketed ammo on the steel silhouette range - in violation of range rules.

Minimal damage. Only grass was burned.
I heard it was caused by someone shooting a Mosin-Nagant at the 600 yard line...

The "thumping" of the helicopter blades was affecting the concentration of the shooter that I was scoring for.

No, that guy was shooting 175gr Sierra SMKs. Not some little mouse gun like some people

There is a fire break around the ranges, but yes there will be a bit more attention paid to that next year. Those plans are already in the works. FD also said they would do controlled burns for us too. They train, we lose tinder material. Win-win.

I think that was a controlled burn they did, to remove all fuel and prevent any "accidents" from happening later this summer.

So, where is the restriction on steel-core ammo?

                AFAIK, FMJ =/= steel-core.

I glad the damage was minor. I like that range a lot. Good people and friendly.

You are correct, they dont allow steel core ammo to be shot at the ranges, yet they sell steel core ammo at the tower. This was brought to the attention of the Diablo Rod and Gun Club board at the June meetings. They said they would look into it, yet many members said they have bought and used their ammo they sell.

Don't get me wrong, if people are told the rules, and then disobey them, go ahead and break a foot off...

It just seems that if you were to make signs reminding folks of certain important restrictions, that the sign should hit all the major points, and this sign seems to be lacking a crucial one.

No FMJ and steel core, can you shoot solids?

I don't know why it isn't on the sign also. Why don't you email the range General Manager, Jack, and ask him ( sacvalley@outdrs.net ) Tell him you heard about what happened and your concern about the signs. He's a decent guy.

I have to ask you though, have you ever seen steel core/steel jacketed surplus ammo that was not also FMJ?

Good question. I would think that if they were solid brass/steel/copper the answer would be no. Solid lead, yes, they are good to go because they are considered a soft point bullet.
