Not being in CA I have the luxury of having silencers on my home defense guns. I will be able to hear the police yelling at me to drop the gun.

I've always been curious what percentage of self defense shooters suffer from tinnitus after a shooting. I guess it's always better to suffer hearing loss and live than the alternative...but still wondering

Nobody knows for sure. Sometimes it takes 1 super loud incident and sometimes it takes repeated exposure. One dude I know got caught up in a fight indoors without ear pro and couldn't hear anything for a few days but it came back. Then a few months later, he passed out in the back of a CH47 without putting in his ear pro and his hearing never returned to the way it was.
When deployed, I'd usually put in 1 ear plug so if I got startled and had to go loud, I'd still have one good ear.

Guns + heavy metal concerts + loud music at home ALL WITHOUT HEARING PROTECTION UNTIL 40 OR SO = tinnitus.

Started my own grass cutting business at age 10, and ran it through age 18, gathering college tuition money (paid for by myself).

Rode go-carts (exhaust outlet just behind your head) and mini-bikes/motorcycles all summer long whenever not doing that. Never wore hearing protection simply because nobody mentioned it - nor would they have in those days - but I wish someone had, where my parents should have.

Let's see, what else at that age without hearing protection... using any power tools for any reason, setting off fireworks - particularly home-made M80's and H100s from materials ordered out of ads in Shotgun News, the rise of super bass/loud car stereos in the early 1980's after the film 'DC Cab', loud Heavy Metal concerts with amps that go to 11, my own guitar amp at 11, Sony Walkman earphones turned up to 11, shooting 'out in the woods' as a public range wasn't needed or required, and probably several other activities I've forgotten about.

It wasn't until age 18 when I picked up machine-shop jobs during the summers (better pay) where they MADE you wear hearing protection that I realized the importance of it, and damage I had probably done, even though I didn't have tinnitus yet at that time.

Now? Nothing but the sound of old TVs in a steady constant stream as the soundtrack to my life, if no other constant background noise or something else on which I'm focused is present to overpower it. It's not debilitating, but it would sure be nice if it weren't there.

Yet now I wear hearing protection at ALL times whenever in proximity to anything loud: cutting my grass, using a leaf blower, anytime on the motorcycle (even short trips), any power tools, no overtly loud music - trying to prevent it from getting worse.

Teach your kids to wear hearing protection and don't let them blow out their craniums with incessant loud music.

Prob one incident is unlikely to be as damaging as lifelong exposure to loud sounds. Either way having hearing aids sucks, so do everything possible to avoid them down the road

My 3rd OIS I fired my 669 about 18" from my right ear. It rang for several days, then went away. However, at 72, I have 2 different ringings in both ears. Been getting worse for a few years, but I just ignore it.

started working with loud machinery (similar to airplane's engine noise) in my early 20's, loud music, playing drums and now with firearms. both of my ears are ringing and the left is no longer hearing the high frequency.
