Owning a firearm and home insurance

How do insurance companies react to you have firearms in your home?

Can you get a discount, as I get a discount with my home alarm?

    ummmm...No.

They certainly don't save you money...and will usually cost you more. While every policy is slightly different, most homeowner policies only cover a limited dollar amount on firearms. This is if your firearms are stolen/destroyed in fire/etc. Generally, you'll need to purchase an insurance rider to cover the actual value of your firearms.

Also, I'm pretty sure you receive a small amount of "free" firearm insurance if you are a NRA member.

LOL I just switched over to USAA and the woman ASKED Me about firearms.

Check with the NRA's ArmsCare program. I think it's cheaper than going with your home insurance.

As far as a home alarm. I believe most good companies will give you a discount for having a home alarm. USAA does.

some of the more "progressive" insurance companies flat out won't cover firearms. Or inflate your rates if they are present in your home.
Some (like USAA) are quite reasonable and accomodating about increased coverage amounts sepcifically for them, and do so without requiring a serialized inventory.

hmmm, I will need to re-read my howeowners.

I already get a 15% discount on my homeowners for the alarm.
