Douglas County Range information

Going to visit with family and plan to spend a day at Douglas County Gun Range. Have read the published information and anecdotal reviews online. Still seeking some answers to questions.

Are metal targets OK on either side of range? Tumblers specifically, as I have a couple of steel jacks. Or is it 'paper only'?

There's a longer distance side and short side. If you set up on the distance side, are pistols acceptable at the shortest distance? Conversely, are carbines OK on what appears to be the pistol/shot gun short side?

On the long-range side, there appears to be auto tires embedded into soil. Purpose of these?

Trying to decide how to deploy targets on either side. Any recommendations greatly appreciated. We plan on being there one day in a Sunday thru Tuesday window, knowing the local LEO have use of range on Tuesday morning.

Thanks for the reassuring comments. Yes, my angst does stem from a lifetime of under-my-thumb in California.

I get the wind speed up in afternoon. That's our experience on SF Bay. Land heats up, air rises, reef the main and head back to the marina swabbies!

If the wind picks up, that'll be what we blame when the women folk see all our shots doing nothing but kick up dirt behind targets.

Hey Bill hope you have a really good time.

Last time I was there had my three daughters in tow. Another CaliGun patriot was there with his 50 cal Barrett shooting empty 30lbs refrigerant canisters. Let my Daughters shoot his rifle many times. Tried to give to guy a Cnote to cover the ammo but he wouldn't take it.

Don't think I can top plunking cans with a .50 cal but we'll try. Brother wants the full auto experience. Know of the indoor range by the Harley dealership in Reno. Probably less expensive than a day at the gaming tables.

I shoot in the national forest under a tree, nice and cool. I use old highway political roadway signs. I slap a shoot-n-c on them and blast at democrats.

The range is closed currently to public up to Friday August 19, due to another agency having to use it for training since their home range got flooded. Since I am already in the area, any recommendation of pawn shops or dealers nearby in Minden/Gardnerville, etc.? Looking for some C&R pistols such as Makarov or CZ 70, thanks!

Contact Carson Guns at (775) 350-7800. About two months ago, they bought the inventory of a recently deceased gunsmith and collector in the area. I'm pretty sure I saw a CZ70 in there.

A friend owns the airport to the east of the range. We used to shoot along the north side of Pinenut. Also sometimes to the south on BLM land for longer ranges. I imagine now that the county has built a formal range they banned other shooting in the county?
