Get her a phlster enigma for her early birthday that is setup for whatever main pistol she decides to carry. Glock 19, Sig 320, Walter PPQ, etc. The enigma will allow her to carry a gun without having to dress like a dude and it's not complete dog **** like most products catered to women. There is a phlster concealment workshop group on Facebook that Sarah and John (owners of phlster) walk people through on how to carry concealed. The enigma makes it very easy.

The PHLster Enigma is a concealed carry holster system that allows you to carry your gun invisibly without the need for a belt. Comfortable, adjustable, infinitely customizable, and rugged enough to survive a fight.

I'd say 9mm for daily carry. A bear gun would require some more familiarity with and most importantly, confidence and comfort, otherwise she won't use it or bring it with.

A sawed off double rifle in .500 nitro express.

In reality, a Glock 26. Something concealable that doesn't take up too much space with decent capacity. She isn't taking out a bear or a moose with a hand gun. If she does end up in a scenario where she does have to take on dangerous animals and bear spray didn't work, a bullet that is 1mm bigger isn't going to make a difference.

As a father to my daughter and son, I would teach them gun safety, assemble and disassemble a firearm, clean, gun handling and teach them how to be a proficient shooter. You say she is a new shooter? Teach, teach, teach and practice, practice practice is all I can say. Then she can pick the right firearm for her.

During the latest ammo shortage, the impossible to find calibers were 9mm, 45ACP, .44mag, .40S&W, etc etc.

Know which one I had absolutely no issues finding?

            10mm.
            Yeah.

            I'm pissed.

Limited means she has only shot my Glock 19 a few times along with a rifle a few times. She loves hiking and going alone with her dog in the outdoors of Alaska.

I have told her that the dog and bear spray are her best defense against bears and moose. There is also a possible threat of the two legged kind. My question is, would a 9mm be useless or would it offer some kind of protection and/or confidence in the wild? I am not sure she could handle a larger caliber...

I also told her to go and visit a gun shop and rent some different handguns to see what she may like. What say the sometimes great minds of calguns?
Less than 70 people were attacked by bears in Alaska between 2000 and 2017ish. That is all of Alaska. Exact figures vary just a bit.

There is a greater chance of being murdered in Alaska than being attacked by a bear. Bears can be trouble but it's not nearly the angst its made out to be. More people are injured by Moose in Alaska ( and other places) than by bears.

Bears and Glocks, especially the 20 in 10mm are all the rage in forums. Be more concerned with violent crime than the bears. With all the forum talk you'd think every other person who went for a hike got eaten, mauled or otherwise trampled by a bear. Be prepared, sure but the priority really aren't the bears.
