knife classes in SF Bay Area

My family realizes that we all carry knives, but, have not taken defensive classes as to how to use them.

Figured I would go with Walt Marshall's class in Richmond. No schedule posted on his web site (www.awt-co.com), no email replies and no answer to my phone call.

Next, was a place recommended by 50 freak. Modern Defense in Concord. No email reply.

Are there any other choices for a weekend class that could bring us quickly up to speed?

A few of my friends took a class from Mike Janich. They had nothing but great things to say about the material and the instructor. He runs a training outfit called Martial Blade Concepts. He's been out to Richmond at least twice that I know of. It's not that hard to host one of his classes if he doesn't have anything on the schedule that isn't convenient to you. His classes always fill up easily.

      What lessons?

      Slash, poke, carve......Lesson over.

If you want a Real Lesson on "knife fighting", ask a Homeboy. There's a
bunch up there to pester, esay.

Then I got jury duty, where the defendant used two stabs to the chest and got the victim twice in the heart. Either strike would kill unless they were in the operating room already.

I would like to learn the proper way to hold the knife and how, if possible to defend against such an attack.

        No "homeboys" in my neighborhood.

Umm, I think that was the "poke".

the first rule of knife fighting is not to get into knife fight, there is no sure fire way to win a knife vs knife fight. when i used to do a little training years ago the instructor would always talk about not getting into a knife fight before we started the knife exercises, disarming a knife from a person is hard enough but add a second knife to the situation and it becomes even harder.

Modern Defense Institute in Concord is currently on hiatus. Their lease was up and the building owner didn't want to bring his rents down to the current market rates.

I'm surprised Tim didn't answer your email though, he may be out of town on vacation.

Lessons for knife fighting...your going to get cut and probably stabbed. The pointy end goes into the other guy. Have a blade over 2 inches otherwise you won't hit vitals in the body. Avoid if possible.

Took the Janich class at richmond he was a really good trainer . Most people carry knives but dont know how to employ them besides the basic slash and stab. Criminals actually know how to employ them better than most of us as evidence of the 2 heart hits and they go for vitals. They also practice on each other learning what targets to go for to kill not wound. It was a good course and covered more than just knife on knife . Also showed how different blades react to clothing with some snagging not slicing. Did a demo on a pork butt wrapped over a tube which got sliced like butter. Also you keep your training knives so you can practice at home with the family. Depending on the amount of people in your family contact some trainers and see if you could host a course in your area.

I went to a couple martial arts places in SF and asked for some knife training, their eyes bugged out and I was shown the door. Then through a miracle, I found a whole bunch of knife-fighting books. My favorite was probably "The Logic of Steel" by Lafond but I must have nine or ten great titles.

I'd be interested in some training classes too. If you want to split the cost of some dvd's, and buy some training knives, have some homegrown sessions, I've got a shop in the city we could use.

I also have a "video", "Tactical Folder", but no vhs player.

There's a lot more that goes into fighting with a knife than you think. Much like shooting.
