Smith & Wesson 386 Night Guard

I am looking into a bigger 357 revolver type for carry. I really like the Smith & Wesson 386 Night Guard since it's a bigger gun but only weights 24oz. Then I looked at the price and it's 2500 bucks.

Question, why is this so much?

Night Guards were very unsuccessful when they were released, and later on revolver aficionados realized that they were really great guns. So, not many were made, now discontinued, and people want them. Thus, they are pricey.

The S&W Model 386 Night Guard was discontinued in 2016.

The ones being sold are being done at collector's item pricing.

In addition for CA, since it's an off-Roster handgun, the cost of legally obtaining it will be greater than in other States.

They are great guns, I have two - 327NG and 329NG.

But they were discontinued early because their intended purpose was to be a modern fighting revolver, sort of "a Glock of revolvers," which, instead of appealing to both the revolver and tactical crowds, ended up appealing to neither. At least not at the scale it required to keep mass production. Which is a pity, because 329NG has much nicer grips and is quite a bit more manageable than, e.g., 329PD which is often used as a backup in the woods.

The 327 is similar. I think half an inch shorter barrel, and holds 8 rounds instead of 7. The trr8 is similar but with a 5 inch barrel.
