It's more expensive (only looking to get more so given import bans) than 5.56 with not much benefit over 5.56. 7N6 is banned so you don't have easy access to a special type of ammo, though I would argue M855 is similar enough.

Even you you reload, finding components is much more difficult and expensive as it uses the smaller .220 diameter projectiles and reloadable brass is around $1 a piece. The dies are also harder to come by and usually have to be special ordered.

Firearms chambered in it are also harder to find as are the magazines. AK74s don't have nearly the same popularity as AK47s.

I'd say go with an AK in 5.56 if that the platform you were planning to get in 5.45.

Do it. Do it. I'm building a 5.45 AK. Waiting for the parts to come in. Do it. Do it. Stock up on ammo.

I do a 5.56 AK next. Or if FB Radom gets more into the US.

I'm considering canceling my AK parts kit now and just buying one of those Galil...

I have a love/hate relationship with them. They’re really well built but heavy. I don’t know I would reach for one in an emergency…probably go to something else in the safe.

You live in the area - go check them out.

I went with a Sam5 in 5.56. No logical reason to go 5.45 (unless you are a second-cool kinda guy).

^ Just something different. We all have our niche calibers, in a sense. It used to be 7.5 Swiss for me until it was near impossible to find without reloading anymore. But 5.45, I bought up, so I'm ready.

Ok... Building AK's is a great hobby. I built all but three of these rifles. Modified the two Romanians. The Russian RPK-74 is original and unmodified.

I need to take some updated pic's these are more than 10 years old.. When I was still in Ca.

                        Forgot this one..

What did you use for the snakeskin template? Laundry bag seems too small.

                            Baller collection as usual svt40

OP, have you tried to get reloading supplies for 7.62x39? I found it way harder than .223 or .308, and apparently 5.45 is even more $ and harder to find components for than 7.62x39…..

If I remember correctly it was a laundry bag... But I also used a bag that wrapped tangerines that I got at the Vons.. So I don't remember which I actually used on this gun...
