What is going on with USI in Concord?

This was from the April Diablo newsletter.

    A Message From
    The Board of Directors
The officers of Diablo want the Club and USI to remain strong and able to provide services to allof the members. We believe that it is time to acquaint you with the status of USI as it pertains to your ability to continue to use USI facilities in the long term.
As you probably know, USI is the non-profit corporation that owns the property and is responsible for its financial operations. USI is controlled by 5 clubs, of which Diablo is one. Diablo has been concerned for some time that the USI board has not been prudently managing its financial situation, but unable to do anything directly as Diablo is only 1 of 5 controlling votes.
We believe that the financial situation at USI is now dire, and that bank- ruptcy is possible within about a year unless something is done soon to ad- dress the problems. We also believe that it may be possible to correct the situation if action is taken in the near future.
The big picture is that USI is losing an average of about $35,000 per month, of which $25,000 is cash. The cash balance as of January 31 was $385,000 which is down from about $670,000 one year ago. There are many potential actions that can be taken to deal with this situation, but the USI board has not yet taken any effective action in the last year to do so.
The Diablo officers believe that an audit committee needs to be established by USI to evaluate the current financial situation, recommend actions to address the losses, and get USI into a stable operating condition.
We are asking for your support in this endeavor and will discuss it at the next Diablo meeting on the 7th April.
    Sincerely,
Diablo Rod & Gun Board of Directors

How is it possible to lose $35,000 a month?? Before the new construction the public rifle and pistol ranges were the clubs main source of income. What has changed?

This morning I got the latest newsletter with more bad news.

    Hello Sam,

As we stated in the recent newsletter, For well more than a year USI has been losing cash at the rate of about $1,000 per day and will be bankrupt in about a year if nothing is done to turn the organization around. Diablo has taken an aggressive stand to get USI to address the problems and to establish an audit and strategic planning committee to develop ways to provide for the long term survival of USI.
It is already apparent that changes are necessary on both the revenue (pricing, utilization, etc.) side as well as the cost (payroll etc.) side of USI. As a starting point, USI has announced the below increases.

EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY - USI has announced the following increases:

    Shotgun Fees:
    $7.00 "Member" Discount
    $12.00 "Non-Member"

    Public Rifle/Pistol Fees:
    $12.00 "Member" Discount
    25.00 "Non-Member"

EFFECTIVE May1, 2022 USI is instituting a new "shooting card" in order to take advantage of club member discounts. The INITIAL price for this card is currently set at $200 per year.

This means that we will all need to have both a club membership and a USI shooting card to get the member rates on the range. Club members that do not buy the USI card will be charged the "non-member" rates. There are many other details for USI to work out as well in the coming weeks.
For questions and answers please watch for another email blast from the Board on where you can express comments and opinions.

    Thank You,
Diablo Rod & Gun, Board of Directors.

From what I understand Diablo had nothing to do with this increase. It I was completely out of their hands.

It has been awhile since I have been to USI but it was always a safe great place to spend time and shoot. What can be done to keep it afloat? We can't lose another range.

    Sammy

The construction at Concord took forever.
        Maybe losses there??
        Mismanagement?
        No clue.
        Sad to hear this.

I've been a few times this year, great range with an absolutely awesome staff/RSO's.
          from what I understand, the RSO's are paid employees - not volunteer club members;

please correct me if wrong, but does have some impact on their bottom line?

Seems the season for financial scandals. My ham radio club is also having an ugly fight among board members over finance.

You are not wrong but they always had paid RO's. The difference I see is the number of employees. There has to be double the RO staff compared to before the closure. It also has more shooting stations but I hear the place is fairly slow as of late. Understandable if you look at the price of ammo and gas.

I think these price hikes are going to have the opposite effect. Every member I spoke to today is very upset. Paying members have had no explanation from anyone in charge. Diablo is trying to get the word out but is management listening? Who knows.

Would members be interested in volunteering? The question has not been asked but it might help. Possibly shortening days and hours to save money? I don't know what can be done but it would be tragic if it closed for good.

The shooting community is very tight, especially here in California. We all need to stick together and figure out how to save it.

There are 4 other clubs at USI, Diablo Rod and Gun Club voted against it, but got outvoted. In these crazy times, shooting is becoming more of a luxury than a hobby, the proposed changes are outrageous! It’s sad, they will turn more people away that they desperately need to possibly turn it around, at this point it looks like they may be done, if they can’t figure it out. It’s a nice place to shoot, but many will go back to Yolo to shoot on range days, and compete(if possible) at USI or Richmond…

San Leandro also charges $25 to shoot.

The 5 different clubs caused many of the delays in the remodel, nothing has changed. They are just like a typical dysfunctional family. Ever try to settle an estate between multiple family members? Wouldn’t be surprised to see it tits up in the near future.

Does anyone know where I could locate verified financial statements for USI showing details of income/expenditures?

I hope a attitude has changed in the pay office. I haven't been there since last year.

Every delegate to USI (usually Club Presidents) Can request any piece of documentation concerning USI.

If you belong to a club, go to their meetings and request whatever documentation/information you think valuable. The Presidents then just need to ask USI to provide it.

Barring that USI is a Non-Profit and files public records with the IRS. Tax forms 990.
