    Gun recommendation program

Can someone write a program that asks you a series of questions then gives you a few recommendations for a gun? We see "What gun should I get?" threads all the time and while they're fun to answer they always seem to be missing some information for us to give good recommendations.

I used to be able to do some basic programming but I forgot it all. I kinda know what I want to do but I don't know the code to do it any more. I was thinking starting off with a large list of guns and then asking questions that whittles away at the list till it gets down to 10 or so and gives you the result.

It'd cool because noobs could get recommendations from the program and the forum members could answer the specifics Qs that would come up. If I could program I'd probably start off with questions pertaining to the primary purpose of the gun--CCW, HD, plinking, hunting, 4-legged SD, bling-bling.... Then figure out what caliber the gun should be... then figure out specific stuff like revolver or semiauto, how often they plan on practicing, etc.

I think it sounds like a great idea.

The hard (tedious) part would be assembling the database of so many guns with all of their attributes.

After that, the code for querying such a database would be pretty simple, I would think.

Someone already did it. Check out hunch.com

Very basic, but it does essentially what you asked.

Good idea. I'm sure the gun counter guys would try to rain on your parade? Hehe.

Any program like that would have to build in for many variable factors such as weather, terrain, season, type of game, legalities, caliber restrictions, ammo restrictions, peripheral considerations, worse case scenarios, etc., etc.

A .300 Wby can take most African plains game, but is it "the best" choice when unexpectedly confronted by a Cape Buffalo or Hippo? Firearm choice and caliber is only a small consideration next to physical fitness, shot placement, shooting skill, awareness, reaction requirements, what to do after the shot, etc.

A simulator is great, but nothing will replace the seasoned and experienced firearm instructor and/or hunting guide.

Before I bought my first handgun, I wish someone had told me to take a step back to consider whether single action/double action and safety/decocker is best for yourself. I bought my S&W Sigma .40 based on caliber and price only, ended up with a DAO tank.

It is very basic. It seems like a Quiz app that I would take on Facebook. It only recommends one gun. I was thinking of a program that recommends a few, and asks a lot more detailed questions.

"Where can I take a basic gun class?" is the best place to start. Software rules over hardware.

                      There are programs that diagnose

medical problems. This would be similar but much simpler. It would also eliminate the major fun of buying a gun which is listening to all the BS that gun store clerks, mall ninjas and friends give you. The real knack to making these things accurate is asking the same questions in different ways to get to the truth.
