Army officially picks SIG for new rifles

I searched, am I the first to post this? Kind of a big deal. Army going to a new caliber infantry rifle for the first time since the adoption of the M16.

And they will be using the new 6.8 bi-metal case ammo.

        Yup, in Phoenix.

It's going to replace the M4? Ouch, it's 8.4 pounds, and the ammo is going to be heavy too. It's basically .308 sized.

The civilian version is called the MCX Spear. It has a 13" barrel, so I don't know how that's going to work. SBR's are a hard sell.

8 grand for the limited edition. SIG even has ammo.

That was partly the point I think. 20rd mags I think standard. Chamber pressure is way up there, and think I read they are getting 3000+ fps, out of sub-16in barrels. With a 120grn or so bullet. That's a lot of downrange energy, which was the requirement. But the cartridge itself actually weighs less than .308s do.

With NATO allies still using 5.56x45 or 7.62x51 in their primary infantry rifles, I don't see us going away from them anytime soon. This will likely be a rifle and caliber used by special forces and a limited number of infantry units. I don't see how SIG would be able to produce enough ammo to supply the entire armed forces by themselves. Current ammo is contracted to numerous suppliers domestically and globally.

It's not a NATO cartridge yet afaik, and it's basically going to be proof of concept in the field by SF. The rifle weighs a pound more than the M4 and the ammo is heavier. The rifle might not even have a happy switch. If it gets wide acceptance, Lake City can certainly make the ammo.

5.56 was a proprietary cartridge when the M16 came out.

There was no existing cartridge that met military requirements. None of the other candidates used one either. 3000 fps out of a 13 inch barrel? You should look at the specs.

If sig never won the military contracts against glock, i doubt we'd see their non-innovating *** in the military arms news again.

They are way beyond "proof of concept", that already happened 2 years ago. This was a selection and primary contract, and the Army's budget for next year asks to buy 30,000 rifles. Army says it will be the standard rifle for all infantry, and the machine gun to go with it replacing the M249. Of course the transition will take a bit.
