Luckily, I haven't had to deal with that, only knives. That's when the really fun part comes in - when the perp sues you
If what you say is true, you should know that taking a handgun away is alot easier than a knife.

Ah, I love that. "Why not comply him, you'd be out a few watches..." "Because then I'd be at his mercy, right?"

Maybe. Do you know anyone who teaches that in L.A. area? Absent training in that, I'll go with the training I have though.

I don't know any private instructors. I get my training at work.

If you knew a way to take his gun, would you have tried? Or was he too far away?

                  It's not that dramatic.

When I was younger and dumber I had younger and dumber friends.
One of them got to playing with the .22 revolver that was his dad's before dad passed away.
He thought it was empty and pointed it at my face from a foot or so away and cocked the hammer and pulled the trigger.
I saw the round in the cylinder rotating up and pivoted away to the right while striking his arm downward.
Even with a double action revolver being worked single action I did not have enough time to get completely out of the way. The gun discharged and the round dug a channel on the left side of my ribs. Shallow and not much beyond the layers of skin but it was attention getting.

I don't remember much for a few seconds, apparently I took him down by the throat while drawing my knife. That is when the friend who told me that grabbed me by the belt and collar and lifted me a couple of feet up off of my friend.
All I remember is seeing the cylinder, starting to move and then dangling in mid air like an angry schnauzer.

My friend apologized up down left and right, swore he thought it was unloaded and sat through a VERY heated lecture about how stupid, careless and dangerous that was.

So yeah, I've reacted bare handed to a gun drawn and fired and even at close range with the slow motion of a friend playing around cocking the gun I still did not get out unscathed.
Nowadays I think I'd just drop and draw instead of getting all ninja on the bad guy.

                    I knew, and know.

I also know that those who teach those moves consider them dicey and last resort-ish at best.

I teach those techniques. Yes, they are fraught with risk but I don't think that the outcome is uncertain. There's certainly less risk than leaving it up to the guy holding the gun to my head. If anyone ever pointed a gun at my head, I'd consider that it's time for the last resort.

When you do a gun take away the likely hood is you will get shot...you just have to hope that it's in a less vital area.

I'll have to disagree with you. I've done this nearly a thousand times with Simunitions and the like and have NEVER been shot. Even when the holder of the gun was expecting it and KNEW what I was going to do. It's simply a case of action beating reaction.
