I hunt in Alaska, and carry a S&W 329PD with my custom handloads, 255 gr Keith style lead at 16 BHN. I have it in my chest holster. Since brown bears have become quite prominent in the area I hunt in Montana, I now carry the 329PD there, too.

I would consider carrying a 10mm for more capacity.

Anywhere without the brown bears, anything will do.

For two-legged predators, I’ll usually take a 9mm or 40 (Glock or XD). If four-legged, then I’ll take mt g20 or g29. If in snake country, then it’s a revolver with a couple of rounds of snake shot. For a base camp, there’s nothing wrong with having a shotgun or AR at the ready.

If I'm moving with my own two feet, it's a .357 Magnum revolver. My flavor of the day is a Colt King Cobra - small enough and decently light enough in a Hill People Gear chest rig, big enough to not make shooting + practicing with full power magnum loads too painful, and long enough barrel in a good, solid cartridge with enough muzzle energy for anything I would encounter here in California.

If I'm moving with an engine, it's a .357 Magnum lever action.

If I was to take you backpacking into the Sierras you’d quickly regret choosing a gun that weighed more than a 16 oz.

But I suppose if your brain automatically goes to big gun for outdoors then you’re not going to be into backpacking!

I've spent a lot of time in the back country, and my thoughts are that a good 12ga with buck and slugs is what you're going to want for bear country if you're stationary for a while or car camping. I used to have a double coach gun that broke down for transport and was easy to transfer into our tent. Now, for a long-gun I'm going to bring a Winchester model 12 takedown and a couple boxes of shells.

If you're through-hiking/camping/portaging a canoe, etc. weight becomes a major concern, and at that point, I'd probably downsize to a reliable major caliber weapon that is as light as possible, for big cats/coyotes/tweakers. From my current collection that would be something like my Smith Airweight and 3-4 six-round speed strips, or my Shield 9mm and 2 spare 8-round mags. I also just got a backpacker stock for our PC carbine 9mm that makes it into a very slick little package. Not great for bears, but for everything else it'd do fine. Both handguns are quick to deploy and are carried in a Hill People gear chest rig. I fly-fished all over Missouri, hiking/wading/scrambling with my Shield 9mm and a spare mag and always felt well-armed.

For hiking and bears - I really do feel like bells/clapping/singing/whistles are good to avoid startling momma bear, with a big can of bear spray on your shoulder strap as a main line of defense. If I were to buy a handgun for bear county, I'd probably look for a lightweight K-frame size .357/44 mag revolver. I don't know if I could be effective with a .454 casull rig.

When hiking I carry a Model 19 357 magnum in California. its light enough where it doesnt impede me to carry and easy enough to shoot fast.
If I was in Alaska or somewhere where big apex predators like Grizzlies or wolves etc I would carry my Model 29 44 magnum. I may look at a 500 if a 44 wasn’t enough.

In camp i have a Mossberg 590 shotgun loaded with 4 slug 4 buck alternating.
