I'm a little biased, because all 3 of their pistols that my family has purchased in the past have had to go back for warranty work. And, the warranty work was mediocre.
Even back then, the story was, "yea, they had problems in the past, but they're better now".
Well, they weren't then, not sure if they are now.
I would keep my eyes open for a better brand.
Here's a few alternatives I found with only a quick search.

Personally, I steer clear from Taurus except their revolvers. I would consider it for $500 though"To preserve liberty, it is essential that the whole body of the people always possess arms, and be taught alike, especially when young, how to use them" - Richard Henry Lee
