    Best cartrigde?

I know this isn't in the hunting forum, but I am putting it here because I think it will gather more views therefor more responses.

What do you think is the best cartridge for hunting deer and other critters around their class?

I am going to get a Rammy 700 but don't know for sure if I wanna go .308 or larger. Thank you

    Simple answer.

    The 30.06 Springfield.

Many bullet / power configurations available.

    IMHO

I second the /06, especially if you reload.
The way some gunshop clerks spout off, you'd think that they invented gunpowder and the repeating rifle, and sat on the Supreme Court as well.

I do like the sound of that as that is one of the cartridges that I have been heavily thinking about.

For deer sized game I would say the 260 Rem. Less recoil than the 308 and great downrange ballistics.

I think I would take the good old 30-30 win rifle. A Winchester or Marlin lever action. It would double as a good HD weapon!

If you hunt within 300 yards, 308 is a good choice. I have used 308 with head shots, and it never failed me. In CA, with the lead free ammo regulations, you may have to try different loads.

Unless you're shooting .260 Rem in a Kimber Montana, then ouch! I think it kicks more than my .30-06.

But then, Remington 700 is a pretty heavy gun by comparison.

But hey, it's good to get a shot off, so who really cares?

                    I'd go with .30-06, it's a great cartridge.

Keep in mind, I'm not looking at all rifles. I'm looking at Remmy 700 ONLY. I appreciate the ideas, but the only info that helps me is a cartridge that one can recommend for the 700, other rifles do me no good.
