In the near future I will be making my exit from CA and relocating 1200 miles away. I have always been a DIY when it comes to moving and I have never minded driving long distances. The plan will be to buy a cargo trailer in the state we are moving to as it is cheaper to buy there than in CA. Then we can move what we need to in 3 or 4 trips.

Right now we are in the process of dumping things we do not need or will never use and appliances that are getting old will be left behind and replaced after we make the move.

So what you do will depend on what you are willing to do and the time you have available.

One way rentals out of CA are hard to find and you pay a premium because more people are moving out that moving in.

You need an idea of how much weight you need to move and are you willing to make a special trip for the ammo and guns. If the weight can be handled by cargo van, I would rent one where you are moving to, drive it back, pick up the guns and ammo, and drive it back to the new home. The upside is it is enclosed so better protected than in the bed of a truck.

If you need to spend the night somewhere, stay at an RV place and if there is room, sleep in the van, if not, bring what you need to sleep on the ground and you will not have to worry about someone breaking into the van when you are in a motel room.

That is what my son and I did when I helped him to move to Illinois. We stayed at the Kamping Cabins at KOAS and parked his truck right at the door and left the door open so we could hear and react to any one messing with the truck. The KOAs we stayed in though had a night person in cart driving around keeping an eye on things also.

Another time I needed to tow a vehicle to Portland (10 years ago). I rented a small Ryder truck with a car hauler. There was a door from the cab to the box. Since the box was empty, I just through an air mattress and sleeping back in the box section with a light. I spent the night at a rest stop in Oregon.

With the crazy high rental prices in CA, you can often come out ahead picking up a one-way rental in Las Vegas, driving back to CA, then go to where ever you are moving to.
Anyone can look around and see the damage to the state and country inflicted by bad politicians.

A vote is clearly much more dangerous than a gun.

Why advocate restrictions on one right (voting) without comparable restrictions on another (self defense) (or, why not say 'Be a U.S. citizen' as the requirement for CCW)?

When I moved from Napa to Las Vegas, I lined most of the floor of the pod with ammo in ammo cans. I threw some lighter stuff like clothes and small boxes on top of it but didn't go too crazy. POD was close to half full. I tried to balance the weight so it wouldn't effect their moving the pod around.

I used another pod for the household items and stuffed it full.

When we arrived, I had household pod delivered first and hired movers to unload it. Took them 2.5 hours and was worth every penny. Then I had that POD removed and ammo pod delivered. I emptied the ammo pod myself.

      Guns moved in my truck.

These threads always make me laugh. If you were a shooter you wouldn't have this problem.

That's what a friend of mine did when he gtfo WA.

Wish I could do that, but I'm a terminal packrat.

I moved about 1200 miles. Las Vegas was about the midpoint between where I was and where I was going. I rented a storage unit, and on weekends I drove a carload, or a rented vanload, to the unit and unloaded. I like Vegas, so it gave me an excuse to stay the night. On trips where the rooms were too expensive, I ironmanned it back. It was about an 8 hour drive each way. Then after I moved I did the same thing - drove to Vegas to pick up my crap, one load at a time. I did this with only my most valuable stuff.

In the end I probably didn't save a lot of money vs hiring actual movers, but at least I knew my good stuff didn't get stolen.

When I moved I needed to move over 2 tons of ammo and reloading machines, components etc. Ammo was not allowed in PODS, but all the bullets, brass, dies and machines went in. My move was 700 miles I drove my SUV up here with a load of guns and ammo. I had an appointment with Liberty safes for an install the morning after I arrived. I had a medium safe installed where the guns all went and stacked the ammo in a corner of the garage. I then rented a large U-Haul van and drove it back to San Jose Renting it here saved me over 500 bucks vs finding one in San Jose and taking it 1-way north in 2018. A friend and a Boy Scout from my church who was into swords helped me load the van (3,800 lb load limit) until the idiot lights lit. Drove it back north with my sister in law who loves long distance driving and we unloaded, as in made a giant pile in the middle of the garage and I returned the van and flew back to San Jose. The rest of the ammo and guns rode up in the RV when we made the final move.
I spent a bunch of money on MYM Caseguard ammo crates. They're lockable and have strong clasps to keep them from popping open, they stack great and depending how strong you are you can get really big ones. I went with the smaller ones and that turned out to be a great ide as they were lighter than the big ones when loaded which saved my back and they fit perfectly, 2 deep, on the shelving I bought. I also strongly recommend a big garden wagon. The kind with the balloon-tires
They made loading and unloading the ammo a whole lot easier and will be useful in other moving activities and around the house and yard later $150 or so but a time and back saver.
We had the POD delivered about 10 days after the moving van delivered our furniture and stuff. That delay allowed us to get the moving van stuff put away and a day or 2 to relax before unloading the POD. The POD took 3 hours to unload, again as a big mass in the garage (3 car garage) and had the POD hauled off the next day.
I want to add that the POD was a big help We loaded it up 2 months before we moved with stuff we wanted to keep but wouldn't need before the move, Books, bookshelves reloading gear and components, camping stuff, file cabinets. All that sort of stuff. Then, once we had it full, we had them haul it to storage until we called for it after we got settled in. $500 or $600 for the whole rental/storage/delivery, IIRC.
The MTM Ammo crates are $18 for the 18x10.5x5.5 size on Amazon. A little bit more than a .50 Cal can, but they hold more ammo, stack in a nesting fashion and have handles on the sides for easier handling. This size crate can hold over 1100 rounds of .223 ammo in 20 round boxes with room to spare.
                  I like them a lot.

                  Hope this helps
                  Good luck with your move.

This is exactly what I did when we moved to Colorado.

Had a huge amount to move. Ended up buying numerous heavy duty bins, ammo on bottom clothes on top in case anyone looked.

All made it on the move except we did get charged for extra weight since the original estimate was off by 3000 lbs.

I had hoped that I would be escaping at the end of this school year but now it looks like I have to wait two more years. My wife wants to leave also but her father's health is failing fast (he is 88). At Christmas he was still walking and getting around fine and by the end of January he no longer had the strength to walk or get out of bed. He was hospitalized yesterday with a massive infection but is responding to IV antibiotics and is expected to be home in 3 days. Decisions have to be made because his wife cannot care for him so he may have to go to a nursing home or have home health care.

My wife will retire with maximum retirement after next year. If I go two more years, I will get a significant bump. I would have to work to the age of 70 to get full retirement and that will not happen due to my back and other issues.

I need just 3 years working at a job that pays into SSI to get social security so that is what I plan to do and I have many options that will not stress my back.

We are looking to buy land, I want a private shooting range. I have found some property in the area we want to move to with a large shop building already built on it. Prices have been dropping over the past 6 months there so we plan to wait another year then buy. If we can land with a shop or other out building already on the land, we can drop a load off every time we make a trip to visit our son in Illinois. As son as his soon to be wife finishes nursing school, they will be moving to near where we are planning to move.
