The ghost gun aspect is particularly amusing because these untraceable weapons are favored by criminals to avoid prosecution.
Maybe its me, but what would stop a clever criminal from simply damaging the serial numbers ?
How could trace data be used ?

"Ghost guns" are home-made firearms. They have been around in this country since 1776, long before we had the first gun stores. And, yes, you are right, criminals will usually get a stolen gun and use that, serial number on it or not.

That's how they are going to bring in nationwide microstamping, regardless of the fact that it's useless, numbers/firing pins can be filed off, pins/barrels swapped - and even if not all that - doesn't work either.
