Table of handgun and rifle cartridges by year

I was surprised how old some of those cartridges are. The .358 win introduced around 1955 missing.

It's interesting to see all the cartridges that came and went. Some because of changes in the powder chemistry, some because of suboptimal designs for newer firearms, some simply because there wasn't a market for them.

Either way, about 90%+ of these exist only in the history books.

Hey....9mm is older than .45acp so, 9mm wins!
I dreamed of owning a (insert off roster gun here)...

Oh yeah....then the earth splits open with me on one side and the (off roster gun) on the other. Then appeared a large red-glowing pit with gavin newscum, diane frankenstein and governor "brown the drain" at the bottom of it, waving their pitchforks at me.

9 X 19 may have been created before the venerable .45 Auto, but it was designed for those effete Euros, not the manly men of the United States of America.

And, all the greatest cartridges in use today are designs of over 100 years old.

Not quite there yet. Short by 7 yrs. Its little brother the 38acp fits the [over 100 yrs] mark.

I did not see .22 WRF or WMR.

                          Did I miss it?

Oldest commercial cartridge being loaded today. The 22 short. Who would have thunk. Guess I shouldn't have given my shorts away.

Gotta question: It says that the 22 short cartridge dates back to 1857. Were they ever used during the Civil War? If so; what gun? I've only read and heard about black powder and ball. Is it because the 22 short was not very effective against the opponent?
