That was one of my biggest gripes about it. An all steel full size gun, they could have widened the grip a tad and given it 13 or 14 round capacity. I had a Springfield XD 45 which was similar size and it has 13 rounds capacity.

Whenever a company discontinues a model it's because of lagging sales (not counting woke or ideologically-based decisions by heirs of the company founders).

For the past almost a decade, there has been a strong shift towards 9mm and away from any larger, heavier, lower capacity calibers. Service pistols in 9mm, made of light polymers, no safeties, high capacity, low maintenance, easy to assemble, easy to replace parts, etc., are the norm these days. Casual users who want a gun that will perform well at the range, serve as a home defense gun and work well enough as a carry gun, will invariably go for a higher capacity plastic 9mm. In a way, these guns are a counterpart of the AR-15 for handguns - they all look the same, are in the same caliber, and work pretty much the same (parts are not interchangeable like in AR-15, but that's of no concern to most casual shooters).

I'm not at all surprised that guns like CZ 97 are being discontinued. I don't own one, but I do own a Tanfoglio Stainless Elite Limited which is even stamped with the "97" as it's a clone. It was originally a .45, but I exclusively used it for USPSA Limited division in .40 until I switched to the 2011 platform (roster was the main delay here).

It is pretty "chunky" compared to some other .45 service-sized pistol options...

                Yeah, it was a nice gun but it is a little chunky, and if I want a non1911 .45, I'll get a USP45 Expert. I have a USP45 Compact. I much prefer a 1911 or USP45 to the 97b.

Never shot an M&P45 but I have an M&P9 and from what I've heard about the M&P45, Im pretty sure I would really like it. But I already got a Glock 21sf so dont really need another striker fired .45.

My son in law is a big dude, 6'5"

One day I surprised him with the gift of one of my own pistols... one of my favorites in fact... a 97b with a $350 trigger job, TFO aftermarket sights and a stainless guide rod. It is literally a tack driver. The only way you can miss with this gun is to close your eyes and even then you have a chance.

When I told him what was in the box, I read in his face " yeah but it'll never fit my hand".

Then he handled it and that skeptical look turned to beaming of pure joy - " It fits my hand!"

CZ needs to re-issue the pistol in 10mm with a 14 round mag, and CA needs to drop the stupid roster.

Chances are about equal in both cases that we'll get our wish.

the M1911A1 fits my hand a lot better than the CZ97B

for a all steel .45 , the M1911 is my choice

I believe it was designed during the period when 10 rounds was the maximum magazine capacity.

Ian did a good video on it. Worth searching out on YouTube.

And the SAR K2 45 managed a 14 round magazine in a gun that feels just as good if not better in the hand, with an integral accessory rail.

Now, if CZC can get more Barsto barrels the 10mm conversions might still be an option. I should have gotten in on that sooner.

                                It was: 1996, released 1997, hence, CZ-97.

Federal ban was 1994 to 2004. So double stacking/staggering as big as you could get (.45ACP) up to 10 rounds became popular.
