why do they always have that tarnish on the hammer and trigger - im sure it's by design but what purpose does it really serve

i have a model 686 plus and a model 19 - i polished it off

I have a 19 and a 29. Blued. Both triggers and hammers have a bluish tint from heat and it’s not the bluing on the gun I think it’s from the manufacturer to harden the steel. I wish I could install a full rib/support barrel on both the 19 and 29. I was thinking of having them modified to accept moon clips.

is that really effective or even needed?

if so, why isn't it more of an industry standard - having it versus not having it does what?

The color case hardening of the trigger and hammer are a signature feature of Smith and Wesson revolvers. They are a feature that S&W admirers and collectors like me appreciate as being a distinctive touch. It is an additional step and added expense in the manufacturing process but it is something that is well worth it for some of us. You have certainly personalized it.

Color case hardened parts can be distinctive on S&W revolvers.
Color case hardened Colt SAA frames make for a nice looking stand out.

Color case hardening is like annealing but hotter and then cooled quickly in oil or water.
So it's normal.

Do you have any pictures of older guns, like Colt Single Action Army revolvers that have a fully case colored hardened frame, that you've also fixed.

Because you probably shouldn't post those.






But seriously, it's still America (mostly) so you can do whatever you want to your property.
