Lead ammo is still affecting Bald Eagles

Bald eagles, hailed an "American success story" were removed from the endangered species list in 2007. Now, researchers have found that lead ammunition has reduced their population growth.

An interesting study from Cornell University on the effects of lead ammo on bald eagle populations

Problem is the "Lead poisoning" isn't from bullets, it's more likely from Lead Acid car batteries. one study I read stated that the type of lead in the birds has a different chemical makeup than the lead used in bullets.

The same logic and false science that supports the impossible microstamping.

"When a hunter shoots a deer with lead ammunition, the bullet disperses into small pieces. If a hunter "field dresses" the carcass by removing its internal organs, the organs left behind carry lead fragments"

How untrue. every hunter I know recovers the bullet to weigh the difference and see the expansion.

      NPR
No thanks they lie all the time. And the article has nothing to show where lead came from ammo. Then they go it could affect it could affect it could affect all b*******

Broken glass is the issue here for condors. They are attracted to it and eat it.

          The real story.

          Cars need to be outlawed.
          Just killing machines.

Extrapolating these data nationwide, Merritt Clifton (editor of Animal People Newspaper) estimated that the following animals are being killed by motor vehicles in the United States annually: 41 million squirrels, 26 million cats, 22 million rats, 19 million opossums, 15 million raccoons, 6 million dogs, and 350,000 ...

The real problem is from 1920 to 1996 we blanketed the atmosphere in the US with aerosolized lead in the form of tetraethyllead from our car exhaust. It settled to form a fine dust in the top layers on the soil. It was joined by the lead in lead paint and lead from industrial sources.

You can read more about it here: https://grist.org/regulation/leaded-...nited-nations/

This lead is not going away any time soon and is still causing lead poisoning in children in urban areas.

I wish I could find it, but I read several ago a study that found soil lead levels to be high closest to roadways that went through more rural areas and the lead blood levels of deer to be higher in deer sampled nearest roadways and lowest in deer sampled furthest from roadways.

The ban on lead paint is only for household use, not commercial use, and most paint for highway use still uses lead so that is another source of environmental lead that is often overlooked in these studies.

The researchers doing these studies just test for the presence of lead and then make up a story on how it got there. The do not do the actual hard work of tracing the lead. What is the actual lead containing molecule they are finding? Can they eliminate sources such at tetraethyllead or lead based road paint? Are there other possible lead sources in the area?

This is how I was taught to do science at the university I earned my degrees at.
Anyone can look around and see the damage to the state and country inflicted by bad politicians.

A vote is clearly much more dangerous than a gun.

Why advocate restrictions on one right (voting) without comparable restrictions on another (self defense) (or, why not say 'Be a U.S. citizen' as the requirement for CCW)?

Well, at least the lead doesn't affect the taste. Bald eagle still tastes like spotted owl, kinda like chicken with a condor aftertaste.

I have worked ranches for decades shooting prairie dogs (Beldings squirrels) and enjoy watching the eagles come in to feast on the dead. Hawks, eagles, and other birds come from miles around to eat my dead. When the food is there the birds are there. When the natural cycle occurs that wipes out the squirrels the birds either leave or starve. In my 40 years of shooting lead in these fields I have never seen a dead bird. All I have seen is populations of birds grow and fall with the available food supply.

Currently the laws have changed and the ranchers and farmers can now use poison to keep the squirrels under control. Very little shooting is still going on in the area I work in. When I do go shooting my fields may get one or two small hawks to pass by and grab a quick meal. Lead or the lack of it has had zero effect on the birds in my area.

I have seen this cycle many times over the years, high and lows, and it will all balance out on its own......lead has never been a factor and if it was there would have been dead birds everywhere as these birds gorge on squirrels all day.

Hey NPR, what about all the kids that die from lead every week in Chicago? Where's your story on that?

Lead is not H2O soluble. Swallowing (eating) a lead bullet or a rodent that has been killed by one poses no danger to the predator. Just anti 2a BS

People have lived long lives with a bullet lodged in their body.

But, but, they are killed by Amish guys. And we do not want to admit , or address, that the Amish have a problem that is not white.

Turkey vultures are still everywhere. It’s not lead from bullets. They are saying lead bullets killed like 20 condors this year even after the switch to copper. There is just no way it’s the cause.
