surplus ammo like 303 British has been scarce / obsolete for decades , thats why I dont even bother , same with 8mm Mauser , 30-6 , 7.5 French and several other calibers
I wanted a surplus French military rifle but they never had much ammo available , it was already hard to get 30 years ago
your going to have to reload your own ammoComment

I never loaded things like .308 because you could buy surplus ammo for less than the cost of components. Not true any more so people like me will have to start loading. The cartridges that will really be hard to get are the berdan primed stuff. At least I have plenty of .308 brass.Comment

That's why I got an Ishapore instead of a true Enfield.Comment

Last year, I was able to pick up PPU made Garand rounds for about 85c cents/rnd. Don’t know what will be available going forward. I’m still fortunate to be sitting on surplus but once it’s gone, I’ll be reloading for it.
Time for me to start looking for dies & components. If I was into the other milsurp calibers, I’m sure I would already be loading for them.NRA Life MemberComment

The writing was on the wall years ago for surplus .30-06. But PPU and Hornady did start producing M1 specific .30-06 loads. I dont think that production will ever end considering there are more M1 rifles in civilian hands than ever before.
But new .30-06 wont be cheap so save all your brass and plan to reload at some point.
As for .308. Theres plenty of brass and steel .308 being produced and lots of surplus still out there. Price might not come down significantly though.CRPA and NRA member.

Old surplus military ammo has always been a finite number. Once it's gone it's gone. Does it make sense for manufacturers tool up (or even just change tooling) to make ammo that doesn't sell in large volumes. What would they lose to change the equipment over to some obsolete ammo and then the next day or two switch back?
Until the market is saturated with 9mm and 223/556 you won't see oddball calibers. When they do return numbers will be small and scarce to justify the much higher price.Comment

Glad I spent 30 years collecting surplus 06 and 303
