Left eye dominate - right hand shooter

I just found out my son is left-eye dominate. He is right-handed. I know there have been many threads on this, but my questions are this:
    1. I do not have any handguns with optics. Since you shoot optic-mounted handguns with both eyes open, does this eliminate any issues with a cross-dominate eye?
    2. Can one train himself / herself to have the other eye become dominate?
Thanks for the anticipated responses from those who are similarly challenged.

It depends on the strength of the eye dominance. For me, I’m right-handed and left-eye dominant but I also have an injury that forced me to learn to shoot left-handed.

Normally, with handguns, he can hold the gun slightly left to line up with his dominant eye. With long guns, either close/block (tape over glasses) non-dominant eye or shoot left-handed.

You don't HAVE to shoot red dots with both eyes open. It's beneficial to be able to, but not an absolute must. I don't have red dots on any of my handguns, but I do have them on AR's and one of my shotguns and never had any issue shooting them accurately with one eye closed.

I am right-handed and left eye dominant. I also have esptropia which prevents me from shooting with both eyes open, otherwise I literally see two images (the actual sight picture and an identical "ghost" image) that are offset from each other. I close one eye (my left eye because I'm right handed, despite the left eye being my dominant eye) and magically I have one clear sight picture. Sure, I lose some of the peripheral vision that is the benefit of keeping both eyes open, but you work with what you have and you make it happen.

And I've said it earlier in the other thread about being right handed and left eye dominant, when I close my left eye my right eye is now my dominant eye! Works for me.

Just bring the gun over to the dominant eye a little bit, and/or cant your dominant eye to the gun a little bit. It's not a big deal at all. Don't alter what hand he normally shoots with.

Larry Vickers was in the Army's Delta Force and he's cross eye dominant.

I shoot with both eyes open even with optics or irons and never had a problem. I am left eye dominant and right handed as well.
I think I recall it didn’t take a little getting used to when I first started shooting.

Cross eye dominant isn't that big of a deal with handguns (optics or irons). It's more of a problem with long guns.

I have the same issue as your son. Took awhile to train my mind, started by closing my left eye fully, now I just slightly squint my left, dominant eye, and the right eye takes over.

Yes what they said about strength of dominance, if c,along the eye works for them then good, switch it. But if the dominance is true dominance then it isn’t going to work. Ideally they can shoot both eyes open, BUT he may be more comfortable left handed.

It is easier to train your hands than your eyes. My daughter is cross dominant. When she switched from shooting her shotgun right handed to left she immediately improved. Later she tried pistol and even though she could shift the. Gun a little she was just more comfortable using her left hand. That’s with a red dot I put on a Glock for teaching her. She’s just stuck to the trap shooting for now but when she has time for pistol again we’lol just do left.

I have the same thing. It is not a problem. I shoot right handed and just close the left eye. I can shoot quite well.

Vinnie is literally describing my personal experience.

As a youth and young adult, knew my left eye was dominant, but shot right-handed. Getting back to firearms later in life, now have multiple issues. Solution remains the same. Close the left and practice...a lot!

One aspect of closing an eye is retaining 'vision' in that eye in low-light situations. One eye for the shot, one eye after.

But mostly wanted to say PRACTICE. I deal with athletes. While proper form is essential, anything that is replicable AND produces desired results works. If I've learned anything, if it is ain't broke, don't fix it.

Some of the posts here are examples.

Might get a way with it on a handgun but; shotgun-no Rifle-well, maybe.

One can train the other eye to "takeover" at times but you will still have the dominate eye being dominate. Some do not have a dominate eye. Some have a eye that is not very dominate, All levels of dominance are found.

I am right hand/left eyed dominate. I tried shooting left handed-did not work for me. I just sorta feather my left eye and the right sorta takes over.

BTW OP-I don't doubt you but; how do you know he is cross dominate?
When I was teaching newbies shotguns; the first thing I did was to test them using my "Super MK IV" tester. I NEVER told them what I was testing for 'cause some will give what they think is a correct answer. Only told them after the rigorous test. It works every time.

I'm right handed and left eye dominant and shoot with both eyes open. When shooting pistol I turn my head slightly when presenting the gun to align the sights with my left eye. With practice and training it becomes second nature.

Single handed shooting is a little more of a challenge. I see two sight pictures but have trained myself to pick up the correct one (the one on the inside).
