Gun barrel storage idea needed

Dip them in cosmoline.
Put them in a PVC pipe full of oil.
Vacuum seal them in plastic with a desiccant and oxygen absorber packet.

Coat them in RIG inside and out then perhaps vacuum bag them if you want to be extra cautious but it may be overkill

Any barrel I store long term gets the RIG treatment even when stored inside. I also keep my trunk shotgun barrel coated with a thin layer inside and out. There is a lot of condensation that occurs on metal items kept in the trunk but I have never had any problem with rust.

I’ve accumulated a few extra barrels and they are taking up valuable space in the safe. The safe stays nice and dry with a golden rod but my garage can get damp and is prone to temperature fluctuations. What can I do to store these barrels and keep them corrosion free? I have a few shotgun barrels and a few rifle barrels.

Slather in gear oil inside and out then wrap in oil soaked cloth. I found WD40 thin sprays tend to evaporate. I use a heavy canvas cloth that initially was a painters drop cloth to wrap them once oiled. (New cloth not used) Just lightly spray it with oil so it has that dampness. I have some old Savage 110 barrels and some Ruger barrels I’ve kept like that for years.
Once I got my vsccum sealer I sealed the whole barrel wrapped like that.

A thrift store can be a good resource.




For inside the safe I use foam.
Not sure what type it is but have plenty from computer packing, hard foam easy cutting.
Do not think it absorbs/holds moisture.
If you can find enough, cut deep channels and use old riffle case for outside safe storage?

Thank you everyone there are plenty of good ideas in here. I think I will use a combination of these ideas depending on how long I think I will store the barrel. Some may get a long term many year solution and some may get one of those storage bags

I would also look at getting an additional safe, also equipped with a Goldenrod.

I've found that gun safes tend to shrink over the years. The one that I bought more than 20 years ago used to hold all of my stuff, but now it only has about half of that capacity.

You know!!! I bought a pretty big one that's 42" wide. I guess it doesn't matter how big it is you fill it.
