There is also a rack grade special
RM1SPECIALRACK CMP Special Rack Grade (.30-06) M1 Garand. This is a partially refurbished rifle with a refinished M1 receiver, new production criterion barrel, new production American Walnut stock and handguards, and new web sling. Receiver is the only part of the rifle that has been refinished. Remainder of the other parts have NOT been refinished.
Receiver will have heavy pitting above the wood line.
Still have a new barrel -
I've got a Special Rack in 30-06, and just got shipping notice of my Expert in 308 today. The Special Rack is in much better shape than expected, and will be an excellent shooter. I've been looking at photos of the Experts that folks are getting and they appear to be fantastic as well. I also got a Field and a Service early this year. I am very happy with all.
I'd just order up one of those two (or both, or one of each in each cartridge), as the M1 Garand will likely never go down in price or cool factor, and you could always sell one down the road if a Service shows up available at CMP.Comment

Well, thanks to you both for responding, but the CMP site shows everything out of stock except for the Expert. (?) That was basically my question. Are ALL M1's dried up at this point? I'd like to get an RM1SERVICE based on another recommendation, or would love to get this RM1SPECIALRACK, but they're all showing "SOLD," with only the Expert showing in stock for $1K.There is also a rack grade special

Q: is the Special Rack also only $750? You would think there would be a premium for that over say the Field model. Doesn't make sense that they would charge the same for all grades, and except for the Expert no prices are shown.
Thanks for any info."Civil Defense Thru Civil Disobedience; Never Disarm!"

The rack grade specials were marked "sold out" yesterday. Only expert models left now. Who knows if this is a permanent condition or not, but it very well could be.Comment

I've seen from others that some people who ordered field grade a few months ago have been getting calls to ask if they want service grade instead. Earlier this year, I ordered a service grade SA and was given the option to get a Win service grade instead (which I did). During that time, Win service grade never showed in stock.
Service or field grade may show up again at some time, but who knows at this point. There isn't much downside to ordering what they have now and upgrading if something comes available in the future.
The other option is the CMP auction........that's where they have the good stuff.Comment

If you have access to the CMP forums, a decent Field Grade just popped up for sale.

Did the Springfield Armory Inc. Garand you bought have a Breda receiver, or was it one from their later reproduction run?
When they started that bit some 20+ years ago, the first run of 450 used original forged Breda Garand receivers and surplus USGI parts with newly made Walnut stocks that were really nice. It was only after those and about a year to 2 years or so later that they went mass production with their cast receivers.
As for an Expert at $1,000 - that's still a bargain by recent standards. Just peruse some completed auctions for what decent H&R and SA are fetching lately in private sales: $1,800 to $2,200. Those with matching numbers or any IHC have gone even higher than that. I've seen Danish/LEAD and other arsenal rebuilds going to $1,800 every time.
That may seem crazy but Garand values really shot up the last 2 years due to 'new found' disposable COVID-driven investor/crypto/savings money, new collectors, people finally realizing surplus is dwindling fast to nearly full stop, and some people just bored and don't care what they pay.
