That is not one spot. The front sight is on it's way to problems as well.

Some folks have body chemistry that just doesn't get along well with bluing. Go figure. Might be leather or nylon holsters that cause moisture problems as well.

You might want to knock the receiver loose from the frame to see what it looks like in the contact areas. Take a look under the grips as well.

A little oxpho-blue from Brownells and some steel wool should tidy things up nicely.

The good news is that almost anything that goes wrong with a MK II can be fixed inexpensively. See rimfirecentral.com for the experts input.

Does it spend a lot of time in a holster?

That's seriously weird. I had a p85 that sat in a safe for three years and the front sight on it was all rusty too. But just the front sight.

I think a good question to ask is what kind of ammo are you using? Could be something in the powder.

Check out the Ruger forum, I think you'll find that they call that Pluming of the blue. It has something to do with the type of bluing Ruger uses and with age it start to turn a plum color. Hope this helps.

That's a little beyond "plum." I've got a couple "plum" Blackhawks and Single Sixes. That's some sort of definite wear, holster riding, etc.

I was the first person to shoot this gun. This gun also has never seen a holster and is kept in a soft case in my safe indoors with a dehumidifier and silica packs.

Definitely something liquid got on the barrel that took off the bluing. My old Mark II looks like that on the backstrap because I didn't know that sweat from my hand would remove bluing. Sweat turns it white like that. The sight looks like it's rusting a bit. Is it possible a big drop of sweat or something like vinegar got on there the last time you put it away? Was it stored somewhere where something could drip on it?

I read somewhere that pencil lead is good for getting rid of light rust like on the sight. Cold blue will probably make the end of the barrel look okay.

The bluing got hot and deteriorated and then you just cleaned it off. Do you rapid fire..... alot?? Or Do you use a holster? Shoving a hot gun into a holster may have helped wear it off too. Next time buy stainless

Maybe it's from blood! Did you kill sumptin' with it?

Or maybe you shot too much too fast and fried the finish?

cleaned and stored barrel down, some left over solvents went down the barrel and ate the bluing off?

Aside from abrasive wear, some caustic enemies of blueing are:

Cola, or any other carbonated soda beverage.
                              Beer
                              Blood
                              Vinegar
                              Sweat
                              Ammonia
                              Chlorine
Juice acids like orange juice and tomatoe juice.
                              Salts
