    AR-15 Upper Assembly

Hi, sometimes I hear people say "pre-ban" or "post-ban" upper assembly, is this right?! I thought that only lower receivers have serial numbers. Can somebody explain?
    Thanks.

It is all in the configuration as to whether or not the completed rifle is legal. If it is just an upper sitting around then it is simply a pile of parts.
Pre-ban and Post-ban refer to the Federal AW ban. Depending on how you configure it (Go here for details to stay legal: http://www.calguns.net/caawid/flowchart.pdf) then you can have either here in CA.

The term Pre-ban and post-ban are still used by a couple of states that implemented AWB's in the 90's that mirrored the then Federal AWB. It's not really relevant to California given all the other restrictions we have to deal with.

When they say "pre-ban" on the upper assembly then it has threads on the barrel for a flash hider and "post-ban" will not. That's the main difference.
