    Soft jaw vise grip

Anyone in the solano county area willing to let me borrow some soft jaw vise so I can torque down my barrel nut? Or if anyone can direct me to someone who can help? Thanks

Take an old phone book, a good thick one, open it up to the middle and then drop the binder of it, page edge up, down between the jaws of your vise.

Works like a charm for all sorts of things, and the paper stacks on each side conform to the shape of whatever you drop down in it.

Have been doing that for decades, on anything from classic car parts, motorcycle parts (especially highly polished parts), antique furniture pieces, original Tiffany lamp bases, gun parts, and more.

If some level of government had that information, what would they do with it? How would having that info benefit public safety? How would it benefit law enforcement?

Gleam gleam. Phone books 📚 stoped being made in 100 years ago ; )

I miss those phone books. Fun to shoot and find people with funny names and call them collect.

OP how about harbor freight. For my vise I used thick foam and a lil duct tape.

I know, I know, but I saved all mine to use for hammering sheet metal into shape, a soft bench platform, the vise jaw thing, drill backing, etc.

You can still find them. Of course the ones they publish now days are much thinner, but still useful.

I suppose any U-Line or past Numrich parts catalog, old computer/technical manuals, Hemmings, or shop-manual or Chilton's for any crappy car from the 1980's that nobody in their right mind would keep - would do the trick.

I used an old leather holster I've cut up to fit in my 6" vice.

In the past 35 years, I've used it many, many times.

            Works great.

Lots of thick Chinese phonebooks around. Look for piles in the lobby of Chinese restaurants.

You can buy nylon inserts for your vice on Amazon for like $15. I know that doesn't help you know but they are good to have around. I have a couple of different pairs I use. If you're ever near Sac you can borrow a pair if you like.

I use hockey pucks to clamp my upper. I also have a reaction rod if you need to use that too.
