Oh man I'd love to have .38 special black powder for my cowboy replica guns. Does anyone sell such ammo?

Does anyone have a recipe for 38SPC BP cartridge loads, or 45LC?

            45acp blackpowder out of a G21 is a blast.

              .45 LC BP loads:
              https://www.gunsandammo.com/editoria...ad-data/370003 :

The original loading was a bullet of approximately 255 grains with a muzzle velocity of somewhere around 850 to 900 fps. This was achieved with 40 grains of black powder.

You pretty much fill the case with BP under the bullet (or user filler to take up the air space - leaving an airspace can cause erratic ignition with pressure spikes). That is why those old calibers had such a large case capacity - BP burns fast unconfined, but is actually not very energetic compared to smokeless powder: https://forums.sassnet.com/index.php...-powder-loads/

There are several grades of BP. The grades indicate the grain size. Smaller grains light easier, burn a little faster and stack in more mass per volume. In the above SAS article they mention FFG and FFFG BP. Hickok45 tried FFG in .45 ACP and it would not cycle the Glock. Then FFG, and it barely worked.

Back in the late 80's I would travel to Arizona to visit friends and shoot pistol matches with the local clubs. Most everybody back then shot .45's with 200 grain lead semi wadcutters.
There were a few guys that would load up rounds with blackpowder and the 200 gr. SWC bullet and slip one in a friends ammo bag. It was pretty funny seeing bang bang bang POOF! It was all in fun and nobody got bent out of shape about it. They even got me once or twice.
I took some of the rounds back to California and managed to get one into a guy's magazine at an indoor plate match. When the BP round fired he finished his string and gave us dirty look. We asked what are you pissed about? You hit the plate!

Corrosion. Now he has to go and clean the residue off with a water based cleaner or his gun will rust.

Looks like it would be fun to shoot, but cleanup would be quite the chore. My CVA Hawken and CVA cap and ball pistol collect dust.

                    Black powder 38 special

I've read some shooters load their modern BP cartridges with a pinch of smokeless powder, topped off with black powder for better burn & ignition. Can't remember the source offhand.

There is a regular at the range I frequent that shoots black powder. It puts a smile on everyones face when he is there. Everyone likes to watch him shoot!

Back in my skeet shooting days I'd reload a couple hulls with BP and slip into my buddy's ammo pouch.
Same thing bang-bang-poof and a cloud of smoke!
We too messed with each other and all took it in stride.

I like the 38 BP idea. Maybe I'll load a bunch of it up to shoot out of my stainless Rossi. Would still need to clean it after every shoot session, but a little less time sensitive.
