    Left-Handed but Right-Eye Dominant

    Hey Guys,

Just purchased my first firearm. A Glock 19 Gen 3.

Took it to the range over the weekend for the first time.

Had a good time, but I couldn't hit the backside of a barn! LOL

I'm left-handed but also right-eye dominant, I wonder if this is affecting my aim?

I know I'm probably a very small subsect of shooters, but any tips or resources for lefties out here?

Lefty with right eye dominance as well, I'd say focus on slow and steady trigger pull. And work on feeling for the reset.

      Lefty here.

After cataract surgery had to switch to right eye.

Slow down a bit and hang on.

I shift the gun over to my right a bit.

Not as consistent as I used to be, but the barn gets hit.

How far was the barn, new shooters should put targets at around 10yds, not the end of the range. When I got my first Glock after owning many guns I always shot low left because of the awful trigger. You'll get used to it... Too bad practice makes perfect but ammo is like the stock market, at record highs...

Cross dominance is not going to make you that inaccurate. Without seeing you shoot, this is like trying to treat unknowns.

I'm cross dominant as well (left hand, right eye). I rest my chin on my left bicep and center my right eye on the sights. I find I'm able to focus better with my peripheral vision.

Another option is to just train to be right handed. I used to defy that for a long time, but honestly, it's not that bad once you get a hang of it. I can now shoot equally well with either hand.

Im lefty and right eye dom as well, I do the same thing Romeo does. I like having two trigger fingers. Check out Sage Dynamics on youtube, Aron is lefty and right eye dominant as well, I think he has a couple videos on the subject.

I'm the same. But being a lefty I'm used to doing something right hand. So I shoot right handed. I would say try right handed with a two hand grip. I think shutting right handed with rifles actually is an advantage. As when you think about it lagging to squeeze a trigger on your off hand isn't that hard to do but the fine motor control of aiming with your dominate hand is a real benefit. As I learned on 22 rifles as all children do when I started shooting pistols right handed just felt normal.

Left with right Eye dominance here too.

I don't think it affects my accuracy, there is a learning / practice curve in using your cross dominant eye. Find a good instructor and take some lessons!!!!

I did many years ago now and wish I had done it sooner.

Or do what I did - burn a hell of a lot of ammo over many years - then take lessons and get a lot better almost overnight!

I was taught by a gunsmith. He said put the gun sight in front of your eyes, not put the gun out and use your head to aim.

Aiming should not be a/the problem. It is you moving the gun the instant it fires.

Aiming is the easy part… Maintaining your sight picture/alignment is the challenge, especially considering you are a new shooter. Get GOOD training before bad habits sets in…

BTW, I have extreme cross-dominance - I shoot right-handed but aim with my left-eye. Yeah, works for handguns; but I shoot left-handed with rifles. Never had issues with accuracy.

Yes, move the gun to your dominant eye.. easy fix. Now rifles, you'll need to learn to shoot right handed.

                          Or buy a red dot

Are your eyes open when you pull the trigger?

Like many other sports, if you close your eyes or pull your focus away from your front sight till after you pull the trigger your shots will be all over the place. Most common beginner mistake is flinching, you compensate for the recoil/blast before it happens.

A great training gun is a Browning Buck Mark 22LR. A cheap camper model ($300 or so) and some cheap 22LR ammo. It get you to get some principals down without the recoil/blast of a 9mm or bigger. Easy trigger and very accurate.

I helped a friend recently who's started to shoot late in life. His accuracy dramatically improved after he learned to keep his eye(s) open while he pulls the trigger.

With a handgun you can use any eye you like, doesn't really matter. Open sights I even used to shoot rifle with my cross dominant eye, fortunately my eyesight now needs optics on rifles.

As said above good training is well worth it. Not sure what is available in your area, but others may have some recommendations.

I wish I could help, but I shoot rifles, and pool with my left hand and everything else right-handed. Well, I can eat and use most hand tools with either hand. And I am left-eye dominate. I kinda struggle with all of the small things, but manage to not do more than minor damage to myself. So far.
