He can deliver to ffl or ship to ffl and off roster is ok as it is Intrafamilial interstate .

This is correct, but let me unpack it a bit.

Because this would be an interstate transfer, son in whatever state to CA-resident dad, Federal law requires the handgun go to a CA FFL. The CA FFL must follow CA law before he can deliver the gun to dad.

One of those CA laws is about the Roster; a son-to-father transfer is 'intrafamilial' and exempt from the Roster. johnparjr, you need to find an FFL local to you who understands that - many seem not to.

Once you have found such an FFL, ask them how they like to receive guns from private parties; very likely the answer will be for son to have an FFL near to him ship the gun to the CA FFL, including whatever documents the CA FFL requires.

Note that giving you the gun (presumably to hold for him) creates the presumption that YOU are now the owner, and giving it back in the future will require some government paperwork, possibly reversing this process (CA-FFL to other-state FFL).

Frozen in 2015, it is falling out of date and I can no longer edit the content. But much of it is still good!
