Wet weather gun care?

I will be fishing and camping in the rain for 10 days straight. I plan to carry my polymer pistol - Walther PPQ. It will likely be soaked in rain every day. Is it enough to just oil the metal, dry it out daily, re-oil as necessary, or should I take more extreme measures, like Boeshield T-9? Ideas, thoughts, considerations?

The first thing you proposed is already in excess of what is needed; your gun is not a toy and is built for adverse conditions. Your gun will be fine. Salt spray would a different story. Rain is no big deal. I wouldn't bother drying it each day. Start with the trip with a cleaned and lubricated gun and maybe dry it off and inspect it when the trip is over. Otherwise, don't worry about it.

P.S. Fishing in the rain for 10 days straight sounds miserable. But to each their own.

Good idea, thanks. Not sure if there is a prob with WD-40 (water displacement #40) and Walther polymer - prob not, but will check.

I suppose the most prudent approach would be a full take down after the trip.

^ That should be all you need to do short of you taking a full body dip, gun and all.

When you dry it out just keep an eye on anything that looks rusty or discolored.

Worry more about the fish and not your pistola.

When hunting in wet weather I usually spray a light coat of WD40 on my rifle or shot gun. After the hunt I just clean it as I normally would and have never had an issue.

with that much rain, I would consider a holster with a flap. Like the old Cavalry holsters.

But for only 10 days, not worth it, just lube before going and lube when you get back.

Why? On what are you basing this recommendation? Water sounds pretty dangerous for this gun. Maybe you're afraid it will melt? Maybe he should just leave it at home to protect it.

This is the kind of crazy cleaning/maintenance device you get from people who baby their guns. This isn't a toy or a prized safe queen colt Python unfired with box.

Ignore the 'wrap it and bag it' idea.

bad advice. Never spray anything that will penetrate into the slide channel its just not needed.


Unless you completely submerge your pistol in water, all you need to do is wipe the slide down with a silicone cloth to remove any moisture.

Cops carry their guns exposed to rain and weather every day. I never had any rust issues just wiping my pistol after each shift.

It's a non issue.

As a duck/goose hunter, I will confirm that rain is not destructive over the course of days or a week.

Prep the gun with a light coat of oil, have fun, then wipe it down, clean it, and lube it again when you get back.

Yeah, if you put it away wet you will likely see some rust a year later, but that process is slooooow.

The same reason I don't tap a light switch 3 times for good luck when I turn it on or off: it is stupid and doesn't do anything.
