Would a 300 Blackout subsonic with 30 inch barrel be quiet?

    Random question:

If you made a rifle chambered in 300 Blackout and used subsonic ammo and the rifle had a long barrel, say 30 inches, would this setup be quiet? Like hearing safe quiet? Silencer quiet? Would such a long barrel be a problem for the subsonic 300 Blackout?

Thanks for any info on this.

Like putting bright ribbon on a jackass. Why put 30" barrel go 16"-20" with brake with forward ports. Load subsonic. Big slow bullet

No. Just because the barrel is longer, isn't going to make the explosion noise dissipate. It might some, but I can't imagine in 20-30 decibel reduction like a suppressor does. Maybe like 2, and that's only because you are farther away from the muzzle, like standing two steps behind someone who is firing. It might actually be quieter doing what ^ mentioned, just using a blast shield/linear compensator on a regular barrel. Though I have a blast shield on a 10.5" blackout barrel, and I can't tell a noise difference between supers and subs (though I always wear earpro). Maybe a real long barrel you would.

I highly doubt it. It takes at least a 26" barrel to make .22LR sub truly hearing safe

The last silencer test I saw metered a 6" barrel at 165 db. You're talking about knocking 25 db off just with a longer barrel. Some silencers would have trouble knocking 25 db off.

It will be quieter than a pistol length barrel, but not safe for unprotected ears.

It would also depend if it was a manual action or a semi.

A semi chamber opening lets a lot of noise out.

I remember someone shooting a bolt action 22 with 22 shorts in it.... almost sounded suppressed...

Short answer: yep, regarding the .300 Blackout. Best suppressed .30 caliber round to shoot subsonic. Follow up shots don't scare away other pigs. I still wear Howard Leights when I shoot that gun, but that's because my hearing sucks anyway.

Since "hearing safe" is subjective for the purpose of this discussion, I'll say that .22LR can definitely be made to shoot with a suppressor and the right ammo. I shoot it in my backyard all the time without hearing protection. I have air guns that are louder. They're great for armadillos at 2am that are digging in the wife's flowers and not waking up the family or closer neighbors.

You didn't read the OP. He asked if simply making a real long barrel would have the same effect as a suppressor. So the short answer is: nope.
