    Teaching them young

I let my 5 year old and 3 year old play with Nerf Guns. The 3 year old can't cock it by himself, so it's adorable when he comes and asks to me to charge it for him.

Anyway.............. I require them to wear eye protection.

So............. when the 3 year old wants to play with Nerf guns he'll go and get his eye pro, put it on, and then grab my hand and take me to my old small gun safe where I keep them (I treat them like real guns from their perspective).

I'm just very happy with myself that when they want to play nerf guns they come to me already with eye pro and everything.

I'll bring out the ear pro when they graduate to bb/pellet guns, and more deliberate aiming and marksmanship starts being taught (a few more years yet for the oldest one at best).

This Girl’s channel chronicles her shooting activity when she started at (7) years old. Daddy is proud! https://youtube.com/c/AutumnsArmory556

My son was shooting my AR at 8, he was there maturity wise at that age.

My nephew is 13, he’s not there yet. May be a long time before he is.

Every kid is different, starting them young like you are will make it easier on you later on

I had the privilege of coaching my 12 year old granddaughter, her first time trap shooting last weekend.
          What a great day!
          Then said He unto them...
"and he that hath no 1911 designed by my servant John Moses Browning,
let him sell his garment and buy one."
And they said, "Lord, behold, here are two Glocks."
And He said unto them, "Meh, it's a good start."

My buddy has his kids do trigger discipline with nerf. No running around with finger on trigger.

                  Same............

I tried to treat it like a full on gun range situation, but that wasn't working out in the short run.

I do make them wear eye pro, the younger can't shoot unless the older is with him. If they lose a dart, tuff luck, I'm not going to give them another one.

And yes, if I catch them with the finger on the trigger when not aiming and ready to fire I harp on them.

                  ***********
The trick I think is to not suck all the fun out of shooting. So I'll take them shooting when they are old enough, and have bought reactive targets for 22LR.
