Does anyone have experience with laser bore sights? I need to zero my .308 AR-10 and am amazed at the variety of laser bore sights on the market, but very few if any in gun stores. Can anyone recommend a reasonably priced laser bore sight to me please? Also, bad experiences would also be appreciated to avoid wasteful purchases. Thank you.

Laser bore sights

I use Site Lite SL500 Boresighter and have had good success with it. I bought it at Black Friday when Cabela's had a sale on it with another 10% off sale, stacked on a 12% cash back on ActiveJunky. I even used discounted gift cards to buy it.
Anyway, the green laser is strong enough to use in daytime up to 50 yd and in the afternoon twilight, up to 150 yd (wonder what the neighbor must be thinking seeing the green laser dot on his wall.) It gets you close enough to zero so it saves you ammo.
The only downside is that you have to take off the muzzle device to zero because the device needs to sit directly on the barrel crown.sigpic

I like the lasers fine, but I have an old Leopold Zero Point boresighter that will get you within 6 inches at 100 yards every time. Usually quite a bit less. And super fast. Seems like a gimmick, but it's always worked for me.

Any one of the products on Amazon or Ebay will work.Does anyone have experience with laser bore sights? Battery for Laser Bore don't last long. Typically they all use the same battery. Find on Amazon LR41 or AG3 type you can get 2 dozen batteries for a couple of bucks.Comment

HARD PASS
A buddy picked one up for a new rifle... He could not see it at 100 yards...
He ended up finding a tree and in the shade from the tree, he could eventually find the dot of the laser.
He had the expensive Wheeler one.... https://smile.amazon.com/Wheeler-Pro...s%2C231&sr=8-8
I was adding a new scope to a rifle that same day... I set up sand bags... pulled the bolt, looked down the barrel- found the target...
then adjusted the scope to be on target... sighted in within 3 shots...
if you need one, get one that you can see with your scope...
something like this
Lasers work in the dark.... not on a bright and sunny dayRule 1- ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED
Rule 2 -NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO DESTROY (including your hands and legs)
Rule 3 -KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET
Rule 4 -BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEYOND IT

Either works. I only need to take 1 shot at 50, then make my correction correlate to 100.
But yes, a good boresighter is a big investment to make for the few times it will be used.Comment

As others point out, they are good for getting you on paper close up (ideally no farther than 25 yards).
As well, if you can remove the bolt and have the rifle on a rest you can also just look down the barrel to get on paper too. Before there was Polymer there was Accuracy.Comment

Don't buy a cheap one, (chinese). Every time you load it in the chamber the dot shows a different location. I used a good one on a friends AR for his scope at 15 feet inside the house to mount his scope. It shot to "dead on" at 25 yards.
I'd always just looked down the barrel at my neighbor's roof jack up until then.sigpicComment

Laser bore sighters are worthless for any setup which allows you to look down the bore from the breech. Put the gun (or upper) in a rest and sight down the bore at 25 yards or even at 100 if you are good at it, and center the target in the center of the bore. Then adjust the scope to the bullseye without moving the rifle/upper. Done. You'll be on paper at 100 and even within inches if you're good. You can do it at 25 if you want to start that way. Laser bore sighters are worthless for anything other than M1A -type rifles, lever guns, etc where you can't sight down the bore. Even then, you should be able to eyeball at 25 yards.Last edited by ohsmily; 09-17-2021, 8:42 PM.Expert firearms attorney: https://www.rwslaw.com/team/adam-j-richards/
