Is this legal?

Ok So I understand I'm not allowed to own an assault rifle here in good ole Calif.

My question is can I buy the parts that would turn my legal rifle into an illegal assault rifle and just not install them? Keep them stashed away in the closet or the attic and leave the rifle in it's Calif. legal state.

I'm talking about a pistol grip folding stock and flash suppressor. I would only install them on the rifle if by some chance the laws changed or in a SHTF situation when surviving is more important than following nonsense laws.

I guess its legal to have in a box as long as it does not go on the gun. Might not look good in the eyes of the law but it is legal.

You may not own an AK or an AR receiver, unless it is registered an an assault weapon. If you have a neutered AR-15, than you can have the grip and flash suppressor anyway, because your magazine is no longer detachable. As to SHTF situation, I don't think you would be thinking about installing those items right there and then if it were to happen; so I am not sure I am following your thoughts.

Not going the AR or AK route. I'm talking about a Mini-14. The parts would be a composite pistol grip folding stock and a flash suppressor. Would take me a total of 10 minutes max to install both. I've owned the mini and these parts before the ban and am familiar with installing. Ended up selling that mini though before the ban, oh well.

Edited to add: I guess I could simplify things by saying my question to begin was just is it legal to buy and posses a pistol grip folding stock and a flash supressor and keep them in a box? I'd do the same with hicap mags but I'm pretty sure those are illegal to buy or posses.

While owning the parts and the gun together may be legal I would not travel with them in the same case as the rifle (or even travel with them all in the same car at same time). If I had these extras at home I'd keep 'em in a separate locked case.

A crusading DA could try to make something of this; not worth the grief.

While things like gripless FALs are legal, for example, I wouldn't have a pistol grip in the same house as that gripless FAL. That's too close for comfort.

Ownership of the accessories/attachments/evil features is not illegal, especially if no gun present.

And no, you can't acquire hicap mags in CA - this has been the case since 1/1/2000. If you had 'em in CA before that date, you're OK.
