How long must I wait after sending in my $19 registration?

    Hi guys.

I sent my paperwork to Sacramento on May 27. They cashed the $19 check about 10 days ago.

    Two questions:

What is the typical wait time for the documentation to come back. Four weeks seems slow, even for the State.

Am I really not allowed to go to the range with this pistol until I have paperwork for it?

    Thanks in advance.

I sent mine in about a month before you and haven't heard back. I've heard that 3 months is not unreasonable. I wouldn't hold my breath!

I hope you kept a copy of what you sent as I doubt you will ever hear back.

You probably will hear back, eventually.

You can drop off that form at the post office on the way to the range - no need to wait at all.

California does not require that all guns be registered. The issue would be if you committed a crime while in possession of a gun not registered to you - and you don't plan to commit a crime, right?

Now, if you intended to sell it, or give it to a parent or child, and would therefore have DROS or other OPLAW paper, you might want to wait until the check were cashed so the data entry folks would get the transactions in the right sequence.

          Brilliant as always, Librarian.

Thanks for clearing that up. I've mastered some areas of the rules, but not all of them yet.

Some of my pistol reg's have taken as long as 6 months. After 3-4 months, call and chase it down. Last I checked there was only one bureaucrat handling all of them. I called to check on one of mine after 6 months w/ no response, the lady told me to call back after waiting for 4 months . . . I said I've been waiting for 6! She said hold on . . . found my form at the bottom of her stack, and I had the letter w/in a week.

You don't need any stink'n paperwork to take your firearm out with you.

Took 2-3 months the last time I ran a revolver. That was back in December '08. It is being processed by one person, and they've been backed up since these single-shot, dimensionally-compliant AR and AK pistols have been figured out.

You can immediately take possession of the handgun. There is no need to wait for the DOJ to return your paperwork. Just make sure you have an HSC.

                          (A) The person to whom the firearm is transferred shall, within 30
days of taking possession of the firearm, forward by prepaid mail or
deliver in person to the Department of Justice, a report that
includes information concerning the individual taking possession of
the firearm, how title was obtained and from whom, and a description
of the firearm in question. The report forms that individuals
complete pursuant to this paragraph shall be provided to them by the

What do you mean by, "for work"? Many employers have restrictions that do not let their employees carry on the job.
