    Wolf 22LR pre-covid price question?

I am looking at buying the following 22LR ammo:

    40 grain Wolf Match Extra
    40 grain Wolf Match Target

It is going to run abut 21 cents a round with free shipping.

Does any one have any pre-covid price knowledge on these? Am I paying double or triple pre-covid pricing? Or is it close?

    Thanks!

It used to be about $45 a brick 5-6 years ago, not sure about just before covid.

Probably like $0.05-$0.07/rd, pre COVID. You're paying at least 200% increase thats for sure.

        haha.

Good luck finding German 22 match ammo at that pricing in the 1990's, let alone the 2010's.
You might have it confused with blasting grade 22LR ammo at Walmart which Lapua match ammo is most certainly not priced competitively with.

I've always wanted to try Wolf 22 match ammo even before covid. I could never find it in stock anywhere and the price was always very high. I can't remember the exact prices I saw pre-covid, but I remember it was always very expensive. So 21 cents per round sounds reasonable to me even pre-covid.

If you don't mind me asking, where did you find it?

Pre-March 2020 pricing on Wolf was about 6 dollars per box for Match Target and around 9 dollars per box for Match Extra. This was made by SK, and the price for Wolf was basically the same as SK Standard and SK Rifle Match.

The new Wolf rimfire is made by Eley I think.

I have all my ammo purchases on a spreadsheet...damn it it painful to look at. Sorry I don't have much in terms of target 22LR ammo pre covid.

-Eley makes Wolf 22 ammo currently. Prior to them, it was Lapua. Pls correct me if I am wrong.

-9/20 SK flat nose target was $0.16/per round.
10/21 Eley Club Xtra was $0.16/per round.
-12/19 CCI SV was $0.09/per round.

As an aside, also from my spreadsheet:
                  9/19: Magtech 9mm 115gr was $0.22/per round. Magtech 45acp 230gr was $0.41/per round. Geco 9mm 124gr was $0.24/per round. Geco 45 ACP 230gr was $0.37/per round. 5.56 Green tip federal was $0.45/per round.

                  4/19: case of 1000 S&B 45 ACP 230gr was $313.72.
12/17: case of 1000 PMC 9mm 124 Gr was $209.80 (21c per round) from SG ammo (when we were allowed to have it shipped in).

I can't even find these brands of ammo anymore. We had it good pre covid.

Not sure what it matters, other than as a "once upon a time" reference point. It will cost you what it costs you to buy it now.

But, during the couple of days we were allowed to purchase online directly (pre-covid), I think I paid just around $500 for a case of 5K (pistol match.) A couple of years prior I think it was around $400 a case.

Bruno's Shooter Supply had Wolf .22 Match recently (like last week) for just over $800/case. Might still have some.

Peahi: I think Wolf rimfire was manufactured by SK for some amount of time; I believe you're right in that it's made by Eley now.

                      Thanks everyone for the info.

I understand that stuff doesn't stay the same price forever... except bread and potatoes, can't quite figure that one out.

But a lot of stuff is coming back down in pricing: AR lowers, ammo, lumber. I just wanted to get a feel for the market.

                      Thanks again everyone!

You are correct. Nammo/Lapua manufactured the .22LR for Wolf back in the day, which is why the boxes would say Made in Germany.

SK Standard Plus and Match Rifle were also made by Lapua.

We would use these rounds for training. For matches we would use our Lapua Center-X or Midas Plus. Or those with extra cash would use Eley Tenex.

Haven't seen what the current Wolf .22 ammo looks like. I thought they were being made by RWS currently, but it may be Eley.

A couple of years ago, I bought a case of Wolf for my Toz free pistol (my normal standard pistol ammo is Aguila Pistol Match, which, I assume due to the bullet profile, doesn't chamber easily in the Toz. The Wolf chambered without much hassle.) I was running low in the timeframe that allowed ammo shipped to my door, so bought another case (not realizing that the manufacturing had changed.)

                          The new stuff:
                          A) packaged differently: No more cardboard box for each brick; instead 10 - 50rd packs are sealed in plastic wrap, 10 - 500rd bricks to a case. The 50 round pack is now a plastic box with the perforated tray (used to be a perforated tray with legs in a cardboard box), with a non-attached cover held on by the label (i.e. not in grooves that it slides into like most 22 boxes.)
                          B) The lube has changed; the old stuff had what seemed like a silicone lube, very thin, and quite slippery. The new stuff has a wax lube.
                          C) The new stuff chambers about as hard as the Aguila does. I assume the bullet profile has changed a bit but no longer have any of the old stuff to compare.
                          D) In my Toz, I get a surprising number of light strikes with new Wolf. Not sure why. I've returned to using Aguila, and making do with the chambering difficulties. The Wolf will eventually be used for the standard pistol (where it performs flawlessly.) Or maybe my cheap Weihrauch target rifle.
                          E) My offhand pistol testing doesn't show any loss of accuracy, old vs new, but that doesn't mean a whole lot. Off the bench with the rifle at 100 yds, the Wolf still beats Aquila with a very slightly tighter group. It shoots to about half the group size of Winchester Match .22 from the CMP (which is horrible stuff, IMO.)

I've never seen Wolf of either flavor for the prices mentioned. Not even 4-5 years ago. It was always, and still is, more expensive than SK Std + and Rifle Match, supposedly the same as the Wolves only packaged differently. I shoot the SK's just about every once a week outing and go thru quite a bit in a year. Other than very special sales, like Graf's 60 year anniversary, where the SK's were unheard of prices, Std at $35 and RM at $40 a brick, anytime the Std went below $50 I checked it out. I've bought quite a bit of it around $45 delivered, but that's when there was no sales tax on online sales, and free or low shipping costs. Wolf was never that low for me, although I did buy a few bricks back then to try them out, and didn't see anything special about them, so I stuck with SK. I recently bought some more SK Std + from Good Shooting for $54 a brick with no tax and very fair shipping. This was 4-6 weeks ago. Great people to do business with, but it goes fast. I also bought two bricks of Eley Club a couple weeks ago for $147 delivered.

PS: That's right, they changed the packaging on the Wolf so no telling what else they've changed. SK is still the same. I just check, all the Wolf I have left is cardboard boxed. Now packed just like Eley.

I bought a case of Match Extra for $550. This is the stuff made by Lapua. My Kimber Govt 82 liked it better than the more expensive stuff. I still have several bricks of it but no real use for it anymore.

I got more serious in our matches and got a CMP Rem 40X, put a tuner on it, etc and shoot Eley Black Box Match.
