Question on gun purchase orocess

So my buddy wants to buy a shotgun to go hunting with me this year. . He hasn’t bought a gun in California in 21 years. Last gun bought was in 1999. He has purchased guns in California in the past.

What is the exact process he need to go through. We went to two stores and both said different things. He was wants to get all the paperwork and do everything at once.

1) needs valid CA ID - DL or ID
-- a) really helpful to have RealID
-- b) if no RealID, needs a birth certificate or valid passport

2) Some FFLs incorrectly require proof of CA residence for long guns. You cannot change their minds. Typically unexpired vehicle registration works. That is required for handguns.

3) Needs a Firearms Safety Certificate - pay for it and take the test at the FFL where buying. See https://oag.ca.gov/system/files/media/hscsg.pdf - the test is easy.

NEVER EVER EVER go shopping with a friend for guns. I ended up buying a VR80. Not only that….I got home and ordered 10 mags for it. And two more Ruger 45 mags. While my buddy was doing the gotta go pee-pee dance procrastinating a purchase at the counter I was filling out paperwork to buy one. He wanted to sleep on it before buying. But he got all of his paperwork done. I to,d him to just buy a KISS mossberg 500

Never go shopping with your wife for guns.

1. She might say no.
2. She might say yes, but only if she gets one as well. It gets expensive my friends. I am lucky that I am in category #2.
