    Long term storage facilities

Sorry if there is an existing thread, I couldn't find one.

I'm going to be doing a two year work transfer out of country and won't be able to bring my guns with me. I'm curious about the legality of storing unloaded firearms in a safe in a self storage facility in California. I assume it is legal if the facility is aware and it doesn't violate their rules, but I can't keep up with California's laws.

Also, does anyone know any place that will store ammunition? I read it is illegal to store ammunition at a self storage facility because it is an explosive. I was hoping I wouldn't have to sell all my ammunition and I don't think I'll have a chance to shoot it all off before moving.

Any family or close friends in California? Buy a safe, put safe in family members/friends house, do not give them combination. Put ammo in there as well.

I was under the impression that I couldn't do that legally, if they are in someone else's home I'd have to transfer ownership to them or they could be considered to be in illegal possession. Already have a safe so that isn't a problem.

Not sure if it is a problem if they are secured in a safe only you can open.

That can happen with a Red Flag alert, moving out of California, etc. Not that common but not unusual. You keep the combination (or keys) to yourself and you are good to go.

Keeping a safe at someone else's house would be ideal. I'll have to look into this option.

I stored some fairly new basically LNIB inside and out Rem oiled guns in a nice fairly tight closing plastic storage box inside a ground level outside storage unit in Manteca and 3 months later they had faint rust haze. Came off with cloth and some oil but yipes.

So my advice is inside in closet is better, or at least inside "climate controlled" storage unit.

But my friends had one of those and sprinkler broke in nearby unit so Company cut everyone's locks and moved their stuff to other units and story was cops were called on someone for what they found in their unit during move.

Would be nice if NRA or similar org would run a low cost "gun sanctuary" storage service sorta like bank safe deposit box, where specific warrant is required to even look, but for guns, for all the similar situations and for gun owners who have to move in with anti-gun family, or college dorms, etc. They could also accept or come get any guns of widows etc who suddenly find themselves with guns they don't want and don't know what to do with, just the cops wouldn't get them and they'd be auctioned for charity.

Pahrump is a lot closer than the facilities I found on the east coast. I'm surprised I can't find one based in California.

I looked into several self storage places and all of them had a "no guns or ammo" policy.

I think AudioPhil provides storage services.

If you decide to use a storage facility, ask the cops about its history. My unit was robbed by an employee, and I found out from the cops that the place had a long history of people's units being robbed. They just couldn't prove it. How do I know an employee stole my stuff? They caught him later with some of it, violating his parole, and he was thrown back in prison.

I haven't used mini storage type places very many times, but every one I ever had had a no guns policy. It wouldn't be illegal, but if it's against policy, their insurance wouldn't cover theft or damage.

                              2. At what cost?
