    Projection screen targets

I have this crazy idea of setting up my InFocus projector at the Range and projecting images on a sheets of butcher paper or cardboard to shoot. I know I can project still images, fed from my laptop, but I was thinking of doing an interactive shooting target, ie. scenes from a Zombie movie, enemy terrorist/combatant popping up from cover, Aliens/Predators/Homicidal Manics, Cartoons ...

Understandably, we should not be be shooting at Human targets, so I'm avoiding images that show known person(s). So don't even suggest it.

Any suggestions which movies would have some great scenes I can piece together? I might use Powerpoint or a maybe a some Video editor to make my targeting practice.

Yeah! Exactly! Shooting round targets was getting ... blah! We were drawing stuff on cardboard but that takes too much time - and I'm lazy!

That's a really good idea! Get some large rolls of butcher paper and just project onto that. When you've used up a section, simply pull out more of the roll and you've got fresh target space.

the only thing that i think and hope you have thought of is lighting?

since a projector only works best in low light situations. so i'm guessing the range will be indoors? or under heavy shade in the firing lanes outdoors?

At the indoor range, it should be dark enough. I have an older InFocus LP-425Z, with new lamp (I've got two spares). According to the specs, it can throw out 900 Lumens. I don't know if that's enough. I don't plan on shooting further than 10+ yards.

I'm going to trying rigging up a stepladder with a bolt on platform on top, then strap down the projector.

for 10-15 yrds the 900 might be enough depending on how bright they keep it.

but it will be washed out i would assume

why not try to recreate the lighting conditions at home, and test the projector?

The only other thing I can see that you will need to do is take a video of the whole affair to verify that you actually hit anything. It would be a lot of fun to set up, but I can't imagine too many ranges going for it... but I'm guessing you have an in (or actually own a range.) Have fun and post a video of the results!

I might have to borrow a light meter, maybe. I'll set up something at home to try to simulate the lighting conditions.

Okay. What about movie scenes I could use? All I can think of is Die Hard (1,2,3). I think I can find some vid shots of House of the Dead. Maybe "28 Weeks Later". I'll have to watch "Planet Terror" again. Was Kill Bill Vol 1 the one with the Yakuza scene? Ahh, then there's South Park!!!

With the video in motion, though, how can you effectively go back and determine if you placed your shots well or not? One moment the bad guy is going to be at the upper right hand portion of the screen, next the scene will cut to a bedroom love scene, then you're going to see the bad guy show up somewhere else yet again.

Good thinking, but would it really work?

At the LAX firing range they had something similar to this setup but it actually recorded hits on the target. It was an interesting concept, but it did not seem they kept it up and it was eventually torn out.

I'll have to create a loop effect in order to get the bad guy to stay in the same place.

next the scene will cut to a bedroom love scene, then you're going to see the bad guy show up somewhere else yet again.
If in the love scene, it was your significant other in bed with the BG, then it MAY BE a shoot situation! HA!

I'll have to work out the little detail. I'll cruise the net to see if anyone else has put this thing together.

Heh heh.. with the variety of video you can get out there today, I can imagine some pretty interesting shoot / no-shoot scenarios you could concoct.. har har
