    Hang Fire

A good friend blew up his PKM shooting old surplus...

Another reminder on waiting after a hang fire... especially when shooting old surplus....
Rule 1- ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED

Rule 2 -NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO DESTROY (including your hands and legs)

Rule 3 -KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET

Rule 4 -BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEYOND IT
    (thanks to Jeff Cooper)

I spent the first half of my military time in Armor, you want to talk about pucker factor. Getting a no fire with the main gun and doing your hangfire procedure. After waiting the prescribed amount of time, the couple seconds it takes to remove that round from the chamber, pass it up to a fellow crew member who then tosses it off the tank feels like a lifetime.
Im a warmonger baby, I got blood in my eyes and I'm looking at you.

Question for those you have more live fire (where people are shooting back) experience...

What do you really do in a "hang fire" type situation? If you're in war / live fire do you automatically start clearing it as a malfunction? Or do you go behind cover and wait before you clear the malfunction?

I know in competition / low drag high speed stuff / you're clearing that round out of the chamber as fast as possible to keep shooting... that is obviously contradictory to what you should do in a hang fire type scenario...

I suppose if it suffered an unscheduled, rapid disassembly it would by time to affix the bayonet.

                  That would be frightening.

Ive done lots of shooting, some in the Marine Corp and lots in civilian life and have not yet experienced a hang fire.

That said I do wait 30 seconds when the round doesn't go off.

Is that from Marine Corp training? E g if you were in a fire fight and click no bang you are supposed to duck behind cover and wait 30 secs before clearing and getting back into fight?

Or do you only follow that rule at a static civilian range?

Range rules. If I'm getting shot at, I'm not waiting to do anything. Clear that mutha trucker right now right now. Period. If I had a squad of cover on my arse, I might take a bit more time to figure out why she go no-bang.
