Ordering a nighthawk 1911 in California

Im looking at a grp recon w/ no fcs and was told for an extra $600 they'll basically make 2 slides. And after the gun is registered, exchange the slides. Please tell me there's a cheaper option. I don't want to change caliber or barrel length, just no fcs. And a magwell.

Unfortunately, with the roster, this is the only way other than a PPT if you want a Nighthawk with no FCS.

I agree with Mute--this is the only available option outside of PPT for non-LEO in California. It has to be DROS'd as an on roster pistol. And I don't think you will end up with two slides if you do the Express Gunsmithing Initiative; just the one you want, after you send it back for modification.

Here's the thing. Nighthawk is like Baer. The list just has model names. No numbers. It has caliber, color and length. So none of that can be changed. But FCS? I know some Baers have got in with no fcs. It depends on the FFL.

I don't think $600 is unreasonable.

Let me explain.

I recently on my own converted a TRP 45ACP into a 9mm.

I bought a surplus 9mm Remington slide off Ebay.

Then I bought a 9mm Barrel/Link/Bushing combo from Brownells.

Then I bought all the files and stuff to fit the barrel.

Then I had to buy the slide small parts, and 9mm ejector for the frame.

All in, I converted it to a working 9mm 1911 for $600 with mismatched parts and my own labor.

So............ if the quality manufacture like Nighthawk is only charging $600 more for an additional slide fitted to their standards I'd totally do that.

Now............ if I did it again, I would buy a new slide, get finished together with another 1911 frame to match and try and make it look all spiffy. I'd be about the same price again, but with the finishing replacing the cost of the tooling purchases I made.

The way the roster works is that a SPECIFIC model is approved in the exact configuration that it was drop tested.
You can only DROS the specific tested configuration.
Every detail matters, even the type of finish and color.
If the manufacturer changes one part (say going from a milled part to an MIM part), they have to make that a new model and submit for testing with all the new requirements including microstamping and magazine disconnect.

It does not matter if the changes would make one bit of difference on whether the gun would pass the drop test.

You CAN change the caliber, color and length after you have taken posession.
There's no rules against that.

It appears it's $600 on top of the price of the desired model. I think it total cost ends up being the base gun, the difference between the base gun and the desired model plus $600.

This is correct. I went through this very process. There is also a charge for any changes (fewer roll marks, for example).
